Interview with Betty Lawrence
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Get an amazing vocal take and the rest will fall into place.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: On receiving an instrumental track (or a beat) from a producer, I usually import it into Logic and get in front of the mic and test different melodies to try and find the strongest melodic hook for the song. Quite often I will have thought of a lyrical concept I want to explore before hand and this will influence the style of melodies and phrasing that I employ into the topline. I am used to, and often prefer if an artist or producer has a lyrical concept they want to incorporate into the song and then I build the song around this idea. Once I have a strong idea for the first section of the song i.e. intro, verse, pre, chorus, post, I record making sure each section fits and makes sense (both in terms of rhythm and melody and lyrically) and then send this idea back to the producer or artist. Based on the feedback for the initial idea, if the client is pleased with the initial idea I will continue the idea or revise if needs be.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, House and EDM
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: UAD Apollo twin, Rode NTK, Logic Pro X, Melodyne, Vocalign. I always provide a demo mix of my vocals that some clients choose to use on the finished version of the song.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Writing commercial toplines for producers. I most often write commercial pop, house and edm genres.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: It's really helpful if you give as much information about what you're looking for from the song as possible. E.g. if there is a certain artist or song you want the track to sound like or a certain vibe you are looking for then please provide as many reference points as you can. It's always better to write from the outset knowing exactly what the client is hoping the end product will sound like.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I am a firm believer that having a strong melody and melodic hook is the most important element of any song and my ability to find and create catchy melodies over an instrumental track is where my strength as a writer lies.
