Hey everyone, I'm Jimmy MacWilliams, and I am thrilled to bring my passion for music and storytelling to this singer/songwriter job opportunity. With over 10 years of professional experience in the music industry, I have honed my craft, connecting with audiences through the power of song.

One of the highlights of my journey was the opportunity to perform on a national television show, where I showcased my soulful and raspy voice to a wide audience. That experience ignited a fire within me to continue sharing my love for country music and its authentic, heartfelt stories.

Talent combined with professionalism on top of the gift of a velvet baritone voice, makes songwriting easy. Love being challenged to craft lyrics that challenge his range/styling...he's not afraid of anything!

Interview with Jimmy MacWilliams

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I loved making "Just Yesterday" with Beaver feet. He wrote that song with his son and it was very beautiful making the song come to life within him.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am working on an EP an artist brought to me that he wrote with his son that I have had a blast working on!!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Jordan Grace. He is an incredible singer and works with so many talented EDM artists. Also Jim MacWilliams who is the greatest piano player I have ever heard play.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I tend to go digital because it gives me the freedom to make mistakes and easy redo or correct them, though analog is the overall best way to record for sound quality and craftsmanship!

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will not stop working on this until you are proud of it!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love working with artists and being able to bring their projects to life. I did not enjoy going into a studio where the producer had his own idea in mind and I lost my vision. I enjoy bringing the artists vision to life.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Can you throw in a riff or two in places that I didn't add them? I always say yes. I love adding flavor to the song but I always send multiple takes so the artist can decide what feels best for them.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: My job starts when I start singing and ends when I finish the take. I have so much preparation before the vocals are even begun in order to ensure the final product is a great one.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Why are you looking for this song to be produced with me and not one of the dozens of others you have created?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Bring a project you are passionate about. I can always make vocals sound good but the best projects are ones that have a sentimental value that allow you to express yourself.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Taylor 314, A Martin D-28, my laptop, my Apollo twin and my Sm7dB!

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been singing professionally for 11 years and begin doing vocal work 5 years ago. It has opened many doors for me and allowed me to work with and meet many incredible artists.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Very nostalgic. I love vintage clothing and clothing that was attached to the 90's and 2000's style. I also enjoy the athletic look and want to appear dressed but comfortable.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Chris Stapleton for sure. His ability to not only tell a story with his repertoire of over 100 songs he has written and also his ability to tell that story with his voice that is legendary in the music industry, I can only imagine the knowledge and joy I would be able to tap into with him.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: The most important aspect of production of vocal takes comes long before I ever begin singing. If I can prepare my preproduction to the best of my abilities, the song will be set for success at the starting point and have incredibly high potential.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I work primarily on Indie, folk, country, Americana and acoustic rock songs, but always enjoy working in other genres!

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I truly believe my strongest skill is in my preparation for the songs I work on. I have heard from many artists that I asked them questions about their work that they have never been asked before and that I pay very close attention to detail; more than most vocalists due prior to doing any vocal takes. This always helps me provide proper tone, diction and power where the song needs it and allows me to connect with the song on the level the artist created it.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a lot of warmth, emotion, power and detail to a song. I want to make sure the songs I sing for artists are enriched with the soulfulness of my voice and also bring to light the story the artist is trying to paint in the process. My job is to help emphasize the overall point and message, not overpower it or change its meaning.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I like to listen through the demo I am sent a few times prior to working on anything vocally. I then take notes on the tone, where the vocals are embellished or where the artist wishes to have changes, I will sing the song in full in order to make sure the key is within my range and the muscle memory starts to take over, then I will start doing vocal takes until I find 4 great takes I will send both dry and wet so the artist can hear the vocals more polished as a comparison.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a studio at home which includes my Sm7dB condenser microphone, my Universal Audio Apollo Twin MKII, Teletronix LA-2A Leveler, Pure Plate Reverb, Verve Analog Machines, Pultec Passive EQ

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Chris Stapleton, Noah Kahn, Hozier, Ed Sheeran, James Taylor, Fall Out Boy, Zach Bryan, Kameron Marlowe

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I do primarily vocal work for clients. This includes singing their own original lyrics, covering vocals for a song they did not write but wish to release, and/or lyrics that I wrote or cowrote with the artists looking to collaborate.
