Interview with Trever Davis

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: King Turtle as the Bassist. I am so proud of my bandmates, we came from a small dingy bedroom and have since been invited to travel out of state for gigs, and have been invited to play Deep Ellum Art Festival 2021!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Oh, No. Electronic music EP King Turtle album

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both, the important thing is being able to utilize all tools at your disposal.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: Quick results that hold up to professional standards

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: The chance to work with sound, I am obsessed with sound and often refer to myself as a parrot for how often I repeat back noise. It has always been a dream to work as a Sound and Audio Engineer.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: How long have you been producing? 5-6 years What DAW? Ableton and ProTools What are your rates? My rates vary and are discounted during COVID

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: We only make beats. Audio Engineers can add sonic depth to ANY project, musical or not.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What sound influences you? What are you trying to accomplish with this piece of work? What additional sounds, if any, are needed?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Many producers you may come into contact with are incredibly incompetent, and would not last long at a studio. My education has proved invaluable already for efficiency and quality.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Laptop, Interface, MIDI controller/Synth, Bass, Guitar

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I began playing music as a child, starting on piano 18 years ago. However, I have been releasing and writing music for 6 years under various groups and projects. King Turtle has been around for close to 3 years, Oh No for nearly 4.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Aggressive, Full, Complex

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Julian Casablancas because he is a visionary who often sees what others don't, and even more impressively, will pursue that instinct regardless of resistance from others.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: LEARN YOUR HOTKEYS! Nobody wants to watch a dude click and drag. It'll GREATLY increase your workflow and allow you to get your ideas into the DAW quickly. Not to mention, it'll amuse the clients too.

  30. A: Rock/Metal Electronic

  32. A: My ability to meld into a project or group in a way that brings depth to the sound.

  34. A: A professional mix, Versatile instrumentation, Unique MIDI work

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: When in a creative role, I take a hands on and eclectic approach that has been developed through years of songwriting. As a technician, I am laid back and encourage the client to explore any idea.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: Project Studio built to industry standard, able to record audio for all instruments except for drums which I offer drum programming and MIDI work as well. I have multiple synths and MIDI controllers, Drum Pads, Interfaces, etc. State of the art microphones.

  40. A: Les Claypool, Kevin Parker, Jimi Hendrix, Tobi Lou
