Interview with Jo Madden

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Getting ready to guest star as a muse folk/country singer-songwriter for the podcast show Alabaster Flats that I wrote a lot of the music for- such a fun project. I also assisted a singer songwriter recently with one of her compositions and recorded a piano backing track for her to perform with at one of her shows- she was really happy to get to debut a new song for her fans so quickly.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A collection of pop songs for an upcoming EP, also helping a blue's artist finish his songs for his upcoming album.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Belle Loux -fantastic Punk Rock singer, also Jeremiah Scott- THE best bass player/up and coming producer taking these midwests by storm!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital. For the expanded toolset.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will give 100% and beyond to your project. I'll provide all the ideas you want or march to beat of the specific ideas you have to the best of my ability.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The creativity, versatility, connecting with a client's vision and having that lightbulb "this is great!" moment

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: "Can you sing like..." or "I don't know..send me some ideas!" my answer: "Sure! I'll do my best." ;) and "ok! you asked for it!" (I love throwing out creative ideas)

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception is that my time is not valuable/I'll work for exposure/ I can only do one thing. Music is valuable as is versatility.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What is the budget/turnaround time, who is the audience the song is for, reference tracks, reference singers...

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: A song that inspired your project or a singer who's sound you want is really helpful for providers like myself.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: laptop, midi, mic, interface and guitar.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've been singing and writing songs my whole life, recording on and off professionally around 3 years

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Indie pop/folk influenced

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: BORNS...can I sing bgv on your next album pls??? Such awesome creativity and amazing melodic hooks

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: A project done is better than a project perfect..don't over process vocals- you're over thinking it- trust me- you're over thinking it...

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Pop, singer song writer and folk

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Finding a client's vision. This is very important to me- I toss ideas back and forth until I hear YES- THAT'S WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR! Also communication- if I feel like I may not be the right fit for your project I'll let ya know.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Intensity, dynamics, a killer vocal range and a variety of style. I do jazz standards to slow indie ballads to pop anthems- I bring a lot of passion, excitement and creativity to a project.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: With custom songs I ask for reference tracks to get a good sense of their idea, develop some outlines/song ideas and send a rough demo to see if I've nailed the concept and am headed in the right direction. With toplining/vocal work I ask for a singer/vibe/reference track to get an idea of the sound they're looking for vocally.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Full keyboard midi controller, Scarlett Focusrite/AKG 1000 and classic SM57 mics with Beringer audio interface and Logic Pro X

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: My most played itunes playlist features Sia, Calvin Harris and Arianna Grande..I can also be found listening to Whitney Houston at full volume..along with Adelle, Doja Cat..Dua Lipa...the pop list goes on and on..;)

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: So far song writing and toplining/custom songs
