J White on SoundBetter

Exciting, up and coming producer providing the link between real feel & groove and software expertise

Working from my home studio, I can offer production, mixing and mastering services across all genres. Having graduated from ICMP with a degree in Creatve Music Production, my work has been played on Radio 1, BBC 6Music and BBC Introducing, as well as gaining tens of thousands of streams across multiple Spotify playlists. My session work has taken me across London to well known venues such as the Jazz Cafe and Pizza Express Holborn as well as numerous Sofar Sounds and Soho House performances.

I specialise in Hip-Hop, Soul, R&B, Pop and Electronic music - taking influence from the likes of Tom Misch, Kaytranada, Honne, Disclosure & Chloe Martini. I have nearly 20 years experience with the guitar, and can also offer bass and keys playing alongside the latest in mixing and production instruments and plugins.

Interview with J White

  1. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  2. A: I love merging the worlds of real feel and groove with software and electronics. Technological advances have left us musicians with the world at our fingertips, but I think it is very important to ensure that songs have an organic beating heart at their centre. I strive to ensure every track has emotion and soul in one way or another and force myself to avoid the quantised perfectionism that we have access to with modern DAWs.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: I work from my home studio in SW London. Here I have my Fender Strat, PRS Custom 24, P Bass and Yamaha acoustic. I work in Ableton Live with Adam Audio monitors and an SSL interface.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: I'm a self confessed massive Tom Misch fan - he has inspired a lot of my journey from my guitar playing and writing skills to my production choices. From him I have branched out close and wide, now taking strong inspiration from Jordan Rakei, Frankie Stew & Harvey Gunn, Edbl, Bad Snacks, Jorja Smith & Mahalia amongst others

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: Production, songwriting, mixing & mastering

  9. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  10. A: I am currently writing towards the release of my second Constellation EP, Aries, mixing an EP for a client and continuing to build my portfolio and grow my audience

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: After a childhood playing guitar, I was shown Ableton Live by a friend while at university in Exeter in 2017. After a year of co-producing and playing live I was accepted to study Creative Music Production at the Institute of Contemporary Music Production in 2018, and graduated in 2021.
