Interview with Steve
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I wake up every day and kiss the ground to be able to do this for a living. Projects are constantly interesting and challenging and varied.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My plan was to be a rock star but that radically changed after getting my first 4-track and being bit by the studio bug. Since college I've basically spent my waking hours recording, writing, playing and experimenting. Been at this for 40 years.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Tobias Forge (Ghost) because he's bringing back 80's rock in a fresh, modern way.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: It's all about the arrangement. Choosing instruments that don't overlap each other will eliminate 90% of mixing headaches because there won't be any fighting each other. Productions will sound bigger from that choice alone.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock and pop for the most part, but with video games like Call Of Duty and others it's more cinematic and atmospheric.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Coming up with a unique sound or part that elevates the song. Because I'm fortunate to have amassed a really wide variety of instruments, amps, tools and techniques.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I came up on analog but don't miss it at all. There was a very awkward time in the 90's when the transition to digital was happening but that has long since passed. Today we have the benefit of amazing sounding tools and the ability to sound analog if we want without the hassle. It's a romantic notion to record to tape on an old Neve console but I assure you the fantasy ends when you run out of tape, need to calibrate the machine or recall settings on the board and outboard gear for an edit or client notes. And don't even get me started on the 75ms punch gap on my old Ampex MM1200 tape machine!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will always bring my A-game. This is
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: For the Guitar Hero franchise I was brought in to produce and perform on dozens of forensic re-recording (covers) of classic rock songs. Researching and duplicating those sounds and styles of players that are burned in everyone's ears was a challenge that I truly enjoyed. That experience led me to working with artists like Alice Cooper, Public Enemy and The Knack when they wanted to re-record their own catalogs and still sound as close to their original recordings as possible.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I manage, produce and write for two, sync production music libraries (APM's ENDGAME and POP MACHINE). I'm also composing and playing on two upcoming video games. And for the past 13 years I'm a composer for CBS's "Let's Make A Deal" television show.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Both "Silke" and "DEVMO" are two of my favorite, yet completely different vocalists. Silke is without a doubt one of the most musical people I have ever met and her voice can go from velvety smooth to aggressive and powerful. She's an incredibly emotive writer and composer as well and can make you cry in one note. DEVMO is one of my favorite rappers with a totally unique and modern sound, but she is so much more than that. A brilliant writer and also a great pop singer. Both of them have tremendous work ethic and always deliver tracks like it's Christmas!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I'm swimming in gear! Aside from dozens of vintage and modern guitars and amps I record everything through my Undertone Audio MPDI-4 and GB Tracker into a Universal Audio Apollo x8p. Depending on the session I'll either mic up one of my cabs (vintage Marshall 4x12, Mills Acoustic 4x12, vintage Vox AC-30 cab, Roland JC120) or through one of many virtual amp sims.
