Interview with Buzz Low
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to my clients is that I will always deliver a final product they are happy with. I will have unlimited revisions if needed till we have a product we are both happy with. Music is so personal and can be so subjective so I think it is really important to do it right and make sure the client is always satisfied with the final result.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love it that I make something from nothing. You always start with a blank logic screen and end up with something completely new and have no idea what it gonna come out at the end of the day.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My laptop, my midi piano, an apollo twin, a shure SM7B and my PMC speakers.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: When I was 10 years old I started playing the piano, I learned to play really fast but I didn't enjoy playing all the classical pieces when I was so young and I wanted to make my own songs. That's when I started to learn about FL studio and music production in general. When I was 17 I went to the Herman Brood Academie and studied "Dance Production", a study which I finished 3 years ago now. In the past years I have mainly been focussing on my own artist project "Buzz Low' but since last year I also started doing a lot of production / write stuff for other artists which I also love to do.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One of the best production tips I've ever gotten is to use reference songs. Use them to reference your mix, use them to reference your arrangement and use them to get inspiration from.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mainly dance and pop music. The more commercial the better 😉
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I can turn any demo idea into a final radio ready song. I love it when a client sends me an idea they have but need help turning it into a final product and I can help them with that.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I can turn any demo idea into a final radio ready song. I love it when a client sends me an idea they have but need help turning it into a final product and I can help them with that.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Depending on the kind of work I have to do. If I have to do a full production from scratch I always like to have a few references from my clients so I know which direction to go in.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work from my studio in Amsterdam. In my studio I have a pair of PMC result6 speakers and a pair of Genelec's for reference. My soundcard is an Apollo Twin and as microphone I use a Shure SM7B. I have recently bought a Prophet Sequential REV2 synthesizer which I LOVE playing with so far.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Max Martin and Stargate are producers/writers I admire a lot because they have been in this industry for so long and are still really successful. Besides that I don't really get inspired by any specific artists, there are some artists that I like a lot but I mostly get inspired by certain songs when I hear them. For example the Fred again... albums are so good. They inspire me a lot because the songs are so refreshing and reminded me again that there are no rules nor boundaries whilst making music.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly work as a producer for my clients. That can be a co-production to make a demo idea into a final product or that can be a full (ghost) production from scratch. Usually I mix/master those songs myself as well in the process unless the client wants to have to song mixed and mastered externally.
