I wanted a guitar track for a cover song, and there could not have been a better guitarist to make it! Michael sent many options and had vibe checks to make sure the end product was exactly what I wanted. He is very easy to work with and responded promptly and amiably. I hope to work with him for future tracks as well.

Interview with Michael Day

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: 3 EPs of my own music right now. Sound Better Projects Song Finch Projects Mixing Projects

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: I want you to be happy with the end result; If you're not, be honest with me. I will do my best to make your ideas become a reality. Honesty makes everyone better.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: Hearing other peoples idea and working on their art is so special!

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: Whats the BPM? Whats the Time Signature? Whats the reference track? Would you like a voice memo? Is this the right vibe?

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I have been playing guitar since 2006. I have a university degree for music. I feel I am somewhat competent in the area of guitaring.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: Any artist in the folk world, I want to produce your work or add guitar on it or add Backing vocals, or banjo or whatever I can. If you breath indie/alternative folk, I want to be involved.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: I prefer to send multiple takes of the raw track, that means whoever is producing/editing/mixing your track has options to comp the acoustic track to their liking. In my view it gives the flexibility and 'vibe' choices to the producer. It also means if there's a small section in the track you don't like, you can easily swap it out from the same section in another take.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: My strength is my finger picking style, I was trained a classical guitarist turned folk artist so anything in that realm I can produce to a high quality.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: I like to get as much detail about the project from the client. I then like to spit out a few quite voice memos to give myself and the client clarity on the end product. I like to do 'vibe checks' on voice memo as well as structural checks on voice memo, it means I can swiftly send off something to give the client a detailed idea of what to expect. My aim is to deliver a quality product inline with the clients vision, not my own vision of their ideas, thus I welcome some back and forth via voice memo to ensure clients satisfaction. Once the voice memos have the green light from the client, I go ahead and record the agreed track. I will try my best to give you a quick turn around. And I don't mind providing solutions that give you multiple options, so at any chance when it's easy for me to do, I'll likely aim to do that, whether that be giving multiple raw stems so a producer can comp takes, or recording slightly more guitar tracks incase the clients wants a left and right guitar. The more options I can give you within my ability I like to do.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: I am a Mac and Ableton user, with a Clarret Interface. I currently have a range of mics available as well as multiple guitars. My mics include: Austrian Audio 818, Shure SM7b, Shure Sm58 beta, Shure Sm 57,Rode NT1, Behringer B1, AT2020, Guitars Include: Cole Clark fat Lady 3, Furch, Ibanez Artcore Hollow Body, Fender Strat, Esteve Classical Guitar and a Fender Jazz Bass. I also have a Ukulele and a Deering Banjo. Other: I use a Fender Princeton - silver face and a Yamaha CP73 Stage Piano.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: I am predominantly a Folk/Indie/Roots Musician, however, can record acoustic guitar for any type of genre. Finger picking is my particular strength having studied classical guitar for over 8 years. A beautifully crafted fingerpicking melody or riff on an acoustic guitar is a favorite of mine.
