It helps that Fiachra is a great musician. He is a clever producer who thinks outside the box.
I can't recommend working with Fi enough. I sent him a janky demo and a few reference songs and he was able to capture the exact sound I was looking for, even before I knew what it was. He threw in his own ideas and took the song even farther than what I had envisioned, and all of them were spot on. The quality I ended up with was professional level hands down. Not to mention such a kind, inquisitive person! You can tell he really handles every project with great care and lots of passion.
10/10! Fi Mac is an incredibly talented individual and a pleasure to work with. I was introduced to Fi Mac back in October 2021 and we started working on my debut album shortly afterwards. He was and continues to be very professional and a great communicator. What blew me away the most is his production/musical creativity and knowing exactly what a project needs. Would highly recommend him for recording/mixing and above all production. Feel very lucky to have found him.
Interview with Fi Mac
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be as honest and open as you can possibly be about the vision that you have for your project. The more your collaborators understand about your ambitions for your music, the better the final product will be for everyone involved.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently finishing up my own debut album, I am producing 2 x E.P's for 2 singer/songwriters & 2 x tracks for a pop singer. Meanwhile, I generally have at least 1 project on the go composing for TV or Film.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Because variety is exciting!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will not stop working on your project until we are both 100% happy with the outcome. It means a great deal to me that when I finish a project, I know that I did absolutely everything I could to make it the best that it can be.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Collaboration. You learn something new every time you collaborate with another creator.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My baby grand piano, my Gretsch electro-acoustic guitar, my laptop, and my SM7B.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been working as a professional music maker for the best part of 15 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is versatile, expansive, and experimental when appropriate.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Trust your gut!! A lot of the time, the first idea that comes to you is the best one.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: As a producer, I have worked primarily with artists in the pop, hip hop and singer/songwriter fields while simultaneously composing for TV & Film.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Anything you need. Whether it's a big, full, punchy arrangement with perfectly recorded drums & programmed synths, to the most minimal & stripped-back acoustic piece, to anything else in between, we can make it happen.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Once we have discussed everything and I feel that I have a clear idea of your vision, I will work obsessively on building a production combining inspiration from the artist's desires with my own creative instincts. I have made a lot of music for TV & Film over the years which can often be a high-pressure working environment with a demand to produce high quality music within a short timeframe. Therefore, I would generally describe my work process as driven and efficient.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I like to keep things interesting by combining my collection of acoustic instruments with my love for high-end VSTs and electronic programming. I work primarily on Pro Tools, using every quality plugin & VST that you would expect a modern-day studio professional to use. My instrument collection (to name a few) includes a Challen Baby Grand Piano from the 1970's, a selection of acoustic and electric guitars by Gretsch, Fender & Hofner, a long list of drum & percussion instruments, a vintage Hohner accordion, and a decent range of microphones.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Beck, Trent Reznor, SOPHIE, Arca, Rosalia, Sega Bodega, Mike Dean, Rick Rubin, Son Lux, Kendrick Lamar
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I most commonly work as a producer, composer, mix engineer & session keyboardist.
