Interview with Andrea Lepori #mixedbyandrea
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I had the honour of engineering and mixing few tracks for U2 from 'One Tree Hill' St Francis Hotel Remix, to 'Hold Me, Thrill Me. Kiss Me, Kill Me' The Gotham Project. The Blackout (live Video version) and The Europa EP. Mixing both studio stuff and live recordings of this legendary band it is just truly unbelievable, as is being credited on 'The Joshua Tree'. What a record !
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Literally everything that involves me being in a studio everyday, all day long. But lately mixing records it's what I just can't live without.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They usually ask for studio/mixing related questions. Sometimes they also look for advices on their songs. I try to always help, getting as detailed as I possibly can and making them feeling very welcome to ask for more, if necessary. I think it's the only way for me to build strong working relationships with musicians and artists all around the globe, that can last and make them wanting to come back for more work together.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Only one? lol. It's always difficult getting people to understand what I am doing for a living, but I love my job so much that I totally don't care, just let me help you make your new record!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I'd like to talk music and life even before getting started with more technical questions. The more we share from the start, musically and also emotionally (referencing to the common taste in sounds and productions), the quicker we can make things sounding huge.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: If you're happy with your song, don't be afraid of letting me taking it to a next level coming just from where you left it. I love the collaborative side of this industry.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A Laptop loaded with my own itb rig, an Apollo UAD interface, a Josephson mic (probably E22s), my trusted OLLO Audio S4 headphones and midi keyboard to always stay creative.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've studied at SAE college in Milan and London Then I've started working all around the world with artists such as: - Matt Laug (Alanis Morissette, Carol King, Alice Cooper, Slash) - Joey Huffman (Matchbox Twenty, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Soul Asylum and Hank Williams Jr) And also - Brian Tichy (Whitesnake), Billy Idol, Slash, Queensrÿche, - Teddy Andreadis (Guns'n'Roses), Carol King, Alice Cooper, Beth Hart, Billy Bob Thornton, Bruce Willis, Peter Stormare, - Johnny Griparic (Slash' Snakepit) Moving from LA to London I've started working for producer Matty Benbrook and Declan Gaffney and I've been lucky enough to engineer and mix for some truly great artists like U2, The Rolling Stones, Jack Savoretti, St Francis Hotel, George The Poet, Stealth, Violetta Zironi, Kevin Simm just to name a few. I've established my new mixing room in central London by the canal, with amazing views and a super cool vibe that seems to please everybody in the studio. You should come visit !
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to mix St Vincent, Billie Eilish, Idles, Paolo Nutini, Jack Savoretti, Autolux, Mumford & Sons, new records. But I also can't wait to hear from all the super talented, yet unsigned artists out there who need help shaping their great music.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t be afraid to dare and experiment extensively with the sound you wanna achieve with your beats, arrangements and recordings, as there is no right or wrong in this trade. Only what sounds good matters, how you get there is totally irrelevant.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: A lot of different and cool genres, I must say. From Indie Pop to Singer Songwriter, Rock, Synth Pop, but also EDM, Dance, Hip Hop, Trap
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing and Engineering. Making Records and getting involved with exciting new projects every day.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My own personal craft as you can hear in my works and credits. I do respect the artists work to the point of literally 'serving' their songs adding the right amount of excitement, energy and character, as well as my own experience to understand the common goals with them, their producer/s or anybody else involved and getting there as quick as possible, without ever loose momentum and focus.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to listen to the artists and songs needs, and let the music lead the way. There's a few geeky stuff that I always do either when tracking or mixing, and it usually involves templates and setup stuff, but does anybody care about it?
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: U2, The Rolling Stones, Bobby Bazini, Toby Sebastian
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Pietro Della Vecchia is a hugely talented guitarist and arranger. I had the absolute pleasure to having him on few tracks that I produced and mixed. Super easy guy to work with and an unbelievably gifted musician to have on your tracks. Check him out here https://soundbetter.com/profiles/141173-pietro-dalla-vecchia
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Hybrid is the answer. Fine tweaking in the box and getting all the character and warmth out of my desk and analogue gear.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: You will seeing me taking the extra mile for your music and sound at all times, cos hard work always pays back.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Centred around a 32 channel SSL 4000E, blends few nice and full of character analogue gear like API 3124, Neve 1073, UREI 1176 and 1178, with the latest UAD rig x8p x 2 and latest Macs.
