Brandon James Olson

Audio Engineer and Mixer

Brandon James Olson on SoundBetter

My philosophy is this: nothing is off limits, experimentation is necessary, and living outside of the box is standard.

I’m an audio engineer, mixer, and producer based in Santa Ana, California. Like most musicians who turn to the recording side of the industry, I got my start by recording my own music. After years of working on personal projects I decided to further my knowledge and skills by enrolling in the Audio Engineering and Mixing courses at Portland Community College in Portland, Oregon. Since completing the course I've recorded and mixed tracks by artists from Portland, Minnesota, and Orange County, including: Holy Children, Vulpine Slips, Dead Highway, Justin Ness, and S Lazy S.

I've worked with analog and digital consoles, as well as, 8-track 1" tape. In fact, the Dead Highway album was tracked with a 24-channel analog console to 8-track 1" tape, which was digitally converted in real-time into Pro Tools. I then digitally mixed the album through Logic Pro. I have experience using Pro Tools but my main DAW to mix through is Logic Pro.

Although, I love nothing more than analog sound I do realize that some things sound better digitally and that the luxury of recording and mixing analog might not be attainable. I’ve developed a couple philosophies over the years when it comes to how I approach the audio production aspect of music but above all, keeping an open mind and harnessing the best version of the artist to create their own unique sound for each song is my goal.
