Interview with Luis GM
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I composed, produced, and mixed a song for a Spanish independent artist with strong emotional depth. The guitars were recorded by a renowned flamenco guitarist who has worked with major figures in the music industry. The track received significant recognition in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest 2023, making me proud of how artistry and collaboration came together in the final result.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently producing and mixing tracks for independent artists in Spain and Germany, adding real string sections to singer-songwriter and indie projects. I’m also preparing submissions for international songwriting contests and developing sync-ready productions for licensing opportunities.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I use both. I love the warmth and character of analog gear, especially for adding depth and color, but I also value the precision and flexibility of digital tools. The choice always depends on what best serves the song and the artist’s vision.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to treat every project with the same care and attention I would give my own music. I will listen closely to your vision, communicate openly throughout the process, and deliver a professional, emotionally impactful result that you’ll be proud to share.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most is helping artists bring their vision to life — seeing a song evolve from an idea into a fully produced track that feels authentic and powerful. That moment when a client hears the final mix and says, “That’s exactly what I imagined,” is what makes it all worthwhile.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: “I’m not very confident with music theory — will that be a problem?” A: Not at all. Many of my clients don’t have formal theory training. I guide them through the creative and technical process, translating their ideas into music without getting lost in technical jargon. My goal is to make them feel comfortable and supported so their vision can shine.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Many people think producing or mixing is just about making things sound louder or adding effects. In reality, it’s about serving the song — shaping every element so it supports the emotion, clarity, and impact the artist wants to convey.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask about the artist’s vision for the song, their main influences, and the emotional message they want to convey. I also request reference tracks, technical details such as preferred sample rate, and any specific elements they want to highlight or avoid. Understanding both the artistic and technical goals helps me deliver a final product that feels authentic to them.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be clear about your vision, style references, and goals from the start. Share examples of what you like and don’t like, and keep communication open throughout the process. The more we understand your artistic identity, the better we can bring it to life.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A guitar for songwriting, a piano for harmony, my violin for expression, a great mic to capture it all, and a computer to bring the music to life.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started my music career as a classically trained violinist at the age of 6, eventually earning my degree at Musikene in Spain. Over the years, I expanded into songwriting, production, and mixing, studying with Grammy-winning producer Enrique González Muller and Guillermo Marín. I’ve been producing, mixing, and mastering for over 15 years, working with independent artists across Europe and Latin America, and participating in international songwriting contests with award-winning results.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style blends warmth, clarity, and emotional depth. I focus on organic, dynamic productions where every element serves the song’s story, often adding real strings or violin to create a unique, human touch.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with Passenger. His music combines heartfelt storytelling with organic, dynamic arrangements, which aligns perfectly with my production style. I feel my approach to creating warm, emotional mixes and adding real strings could enhance the intimacy and depth of his songs.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always start by understanding the emotion and story behind the song before touching any faders or plugins. Technical decisions become much easier when they serve the artist’s vision, not just the mix.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on singer-songwriter, indie folk, and soft/indie pop projects that focus on emotional storytelling and organic arrangements. I also produce and mix alternative rock, stoner rock, and cinematic/epic music, often adding real violin or full string sections to enhance the depth and character of the track.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is understanding and empathizing with each artist’s vision, translating their ideas into a polished, professional sound while preserving their unique identity. This allows me to create productions and mixes that truly reflect who they are.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a blend of technical precision and musical sensitivity, ensuring every track sounds professional and emotionally engaging. My background as a violinist and arranger allows me to add unique string sections or solos that elevate the song’s character. I focus on preserving the artist’s identity while enhancing clarity, depth, and dynamics so the music connects with listeners on a deeper level.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My process begins with a detailed conversation to understand the artist’s vision, style, and goals. Once I receive the audio files or demos, I review them carefully and provide feedback or suggestions if needed. From there, I move into production, mixing, or mastering, keeping the artist involved at every stage through regular updates and preview files. I typically deliver an initial version within a few days, followed by revisions to ensure the final track matches or exceeds expectations. For projects requiring violin or string arrangements, I record those parts with the same attention to detail, either in my studio or at partner facilities with high-end equipment.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work from a soundproof recording studio equipped with an Audient iD44 interface and a selection of quality microphones, including the Audio-Technica AT4040, AT2031, and Shure SM57. All recordings are made in Logic Pro X, ensuring clean, detailed, and professional results. I also collaborate with partner studios that offer high-end microphones such as Neumann U87 and AKG C414, available upon request for artists seeking a premium recording chain.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Andrew Bird, Michael Kiwanuka, Muse, John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, Damien Rice, José González, Alizzz, C. Tangana, Rosalía
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of my clients hire me to produce, mix and master their songs from start to finish, often adding live violin or full string arrangements to give them a unique and emotional character. I specialize in creating warm, dynamic, and organic sound across singer-songwriter, indie rock, and cinematic genres. My goal is to help artists translate their vision into a professional track that connects with listeners on an emotional level.
