Working with Jason was an absolute pleasure.

Interview with Jason Stokes

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: If I were stranded on a desert island and could only take five pieces of gear with me, I would select the following: 1. Gibson ES120: This iconic thin-line acoustic electric guitar would be my go-to instrument for creating melodies, harmonies, and capturing expressive acoustic AND electric performances. 2. Teenage Engineering OP-1: This compact and powerful synthesizer workstation would be invaluable in crafting electronic sounds, textures, and beats. Not to mention the ability to sample coconut shells, palm fronds, and anything else I can find to record and manipulate. Also, it's got a radio tuner built in so....yeah. Duh. Its portability and diverse range of features make it an essential tool for composition and production. 3. Laptop: Bringing along my trusty laptop would ensure that I have a versatile digital audio workstation (DAW) at my disposal. With access to software instruments, effects, and recording capabilities, 4. Audio Interface: A reliable audio interface would be crucial for capturing recordings on the island. It would allow me to connect microphones and instruments to my laptop, 5. Shure SM7 Microphone: This dynamic microphone is renowned for its warm and versatile sound. It would be ideal for capturing vocals and other acoustic sources on the island, The rejection is awesome, and you could throw it from a moving car, and if you could find it, it would probably still work. That means it could double as a tool. Or a weapon. In the bag it goes.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: Certainly! Here's a valuable music production tip that I'd love to share with you: "The foundation of a great sound lies in its raw, untreated form." In other words, if it doesn't sound good dry, it doesn't sound good. It's essential to strive for a strong and compelling sound even before applying any effects or processing. By focusing on the raw, dry sound, you can ensure that the core elements of the composition, such as the performance, arrangement, and sonic character, are solid and captivating on their own. Challenge yourself to evaluate your work without any effects and ask yourself if it still sounds exceptional. This critical step helps you gauge the quality and integrity of the musical elements without any distractions. If the foundation doesn't sound pleasing in its raw state, it's an indicator that further refinement is needed. Repetition is key. Take the time to iterate and fine-tune your composition until it shines without relying on effects. Continuously evaluate and adjust until you achieve a sound that captivates and engages the listener in its pure form. By emphasizing the importance of a strong dry sound, you ensure that your music stands on its own merit, delivering a compelling experience to your audience. Let this principle guide your production process, and you'll create a solid foundation that sets the stage for captivating and impactful music. Embrace the challenge and pursue excellence in every step of your production journey. Contact me today, and let's explore how we can elevate your music through a meticulous focus on detail and the pursuit of raw, exceptional sound. If it doesn't sound good dry, it doesn't sound good.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: I firmly believe in adapting my work process to the unique requirements of each project, artist, and deadline. While flexibility is key, there are certain steps I typically follow to ensure a successful collaboration. First and foremost, I like to begin by thoroughly assessing your expectations and gaining a deep understanding of your vision. This initial stage allows us to align our creative goals and establish a strong foundation for our collaboration. Additionally, I conduct a comprehensive analysis of the available assets, whether it's existing recordings, demos, or any other materials that will contribute to the project. Once we have a clear understanding of the project's scope and objectives, we proceed to create a comprehensive deal memo. This document outlines essential guidelines for delivery, project milestones, and compensation. It serves as a mutual agreement that ensures everyone involved is on the same page, fostering transparency and a shared vision for the project's success. Throughout the process, I maintain open lines of communication, providing regular updates and seeking your feedback. Collaboration and dialogue are crucial to me, as they enable us to fine-tune the work and ensure that we are consistently meeting your expectations. My ultimate goal is to deliver exceptional results while respecting deadlines and prioritizing your satisfaction. By combining a meticulous assessment of your needs, clear guidelines through a deal memo, and open communication throughout the process, I strive to create a collaborative and efficient work environment that brings your musical vision to life. Let's embark on this journey together, ensuring that your project receives the attention, dedication, and professionalism it deserves. Contact me today, and let's discuss how we can work together to achieve your musical goals.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: As far as inspiration is concerned, I have been fortunate to have crossed paths with exceptional professionals who have left a lasting impact on my journey. One individual who stands out is my mentor, Neal Pouge, whose guidance not only honed my technical skills but also taught me the invaluable art of thinking musically. His mentorship has been instrumental in shaping my approach to music production. Moreover, being based in the vibrant Atlanta music scene, I have had the privilege of witnessing the talent and artistry of numerous old-school industry veterans who have become my idols. Their contributions and groundbreaking work have had a profound influence on my own creative process. As an instructor in the Berklee College of Music's Production and Engineering department for the past decade, I have had the opportunity to meet and collaborate with a diverse range of visiting artists. Each encounter has been a source of inspiration, as these artists consistently demonstrate a level of skill and artistry that elevates the craft of music production. However, it is not only industry professionals who inspire me. I find daily inspiration in ordinary individuals who approach music with a fresh perspective. The beauty of encountering laymen lies in their uninhibited exploration of sound, free from preconceived notions and biases. This uninhibited perspective often leads to fascinating and uncharted areas of development when producing music. Ultimately, my sources of inspiration are diverse and ever-evolving. I am deeply grateful for the mentors, industry legends, visiting artists, and even everyday individuals who have shaped my artistic vision and continue to motivate me to push boundaries in my music production journey.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: When it comes to choosing which artist I'd like to work with, my focus goes beyond seeking out well-known names. While I've had the privilege of collaborating with renowned artists throughout my career, my true passion lies in discovering and working with artists who may be yet undiscovered by the wider world. Every artist, regardless of fame or recognition, has a unique voice and a story to tell. It's these under-the-radar talents, the ones whose potential may not have been fully realized, that truly excite and inspire me. I want to connect with artists like you, individuals who are driven by a genuine desire to express themselves and make a meaningful impact through their music. The creative journey is about more than just catering to popular trends or working on projects that conform to established norms. It's about nurturing and supporting artists who have something important to say, regardless of whether their work reaches the global market or not. I believe in the power of love and attention to transform raw potential into something remarkable and beautiful. This doesn't mean that I don't want you to meet with success, I just don't think that we have to choose, ya know? If you know the market, you can have your cake, and eat it too. By working with artists like you, I can contribute my expertise, experience, and dedication to help bring your artistic vision to life. Together, we can create music that is authentic, innovative, and deeply resonant, making an impact on both a personal and potentially a broader scale. 21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: I have found that the most crucial and intricate part of any project lies within the final 10 percent. This philosophy was instilled in me from an early age and has become the cornerstone of my approach. I specialize in meticulously refining and perfecting the elements that make up that critical 10 percent, ensuring that my clients' music shines in today's competitive market. While capturing sonics is a vital aspect of the creative process, I recognize that in today's industry, much of that work is done in isolation. That's where I come in. My expertise lies in assisting my clients in refining what they have captured, going beyond the initial recording stage. I bring precision and finesse to the table through various techniques, such as timing correction, pitch tuning, and thoughtful production choices, all with the ultimate goal of enhancing the overall quality and impact of the final mix. By focusing on these essential details, I help my clients transform their raw recordings into polished, professional-grade compositions. I have a keen ear for identifying areas that can benefit from adjustments and enhancements, whether it's tightening up the timing of a performance, ensuring pitch accuracy, or refining the production elements to create a cohesive and captivating listening experience. My dedication to the final 10 percent is what sets me apart. I understand that it is often the fine-tuning and attention to detail that can make a world of difference in the end result. I am committed to working closely with my clients, collaborating closely to understand their vision and goals, and applying my expertise to elevate their music to its fullest potential. In a landscape where quality and refinement are paramount, I offer my clients the assurance that their music will not only meet but exceed industry standards. Let me be the partner who helps you unlock the true potential of your recordings, bringing out the best in your music and ensuring that every element is finely crafted to captivate and resonate with your audience. Together, we will delve into that critical 10 percent, transforming your recordings into a remarkable sonic experience. Contact me today, and let's embark on a journey of elevating your music to new heights.

  23. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  24. A: All of the Outkast records as an engineer and a producer. Everything I did while at the Skywalker Ranch, the Redux of Apocalypse now that I worked on at American Zoetrope, and last but not least, all of the work I did teaching the next generation of engineers and producers at Berklee College of Music and throughout Maineland China.

  25. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  26. A: I am not at liberty to discuss it.

  27. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  28. A: LOTS of people. I need more time to peruse the directory in the interest of being thorough.

  29. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  30. A: Ah yes....the ongoing debate of analog versus digital, my perspective is that both have their unique strengths and applications. Analog offers us the warmth and character of palatable distortion given its singular sample rate through transduction to magnetism, while digital provides us with the ability to manipulate sonics through techniques like granular synthesis (elastic audio, and flex time). Not to mention the fact that glue only keeps rust particles attached to cellophane for so long, right? In an ideal world, I would begin by capturing the essence of the sound using analog equipment, as it can impart a certain richness and depth. Then, I would transfer the recordings to a digital environment for the rest of the production process, benefiting from the flexibility and precision that digital tools offer. However, what truly matters to me as a music industry professional is the end result and your artistic vision. The medium or format you choose is secondary to the importance of creating a captivating and authentic musical experience. I am committed to working with the tools that you are comfortable with and that best serve your artistic goals. Whether you prefer analog, digital, or a combination of both, my focus remains on helping you achieve your desired sound and bringing your artistic vision to life. I embrace any format or tool that resonates with you and enables us to create music that connects deeply with listeners. Let's collaborate and create something truly exceptional, utilizing the tools and techniques that suit your unique artistic style. Contact me today, and let's discuss how we can harness the power of both analog and digital to elevate your music to new heights.

  31. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  32. A: I'm only good at midi and rap. That I have never mic'd a drum kit, or a guitar amp, or an organ cabinet, or a horn section. That I am not a real engineer. I'm just a producer in the loosest sense of the word.

  33. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  34. A: When engaging with prospective clients, I believe in asking thought-provoking questions that delve into the essence of their musical journey. Here are some key inquiries that guide my conversations: 1. What is your motivation? Understanding the underlying purpose behind their music helps me grasp the driving force behind their creative endeavors. Whether it's personal expression, storytelling, or connecting with an audience, knowing their motivation allows me to align my approach with their vision. 2. Journey or destination? I explore whether they value the process of creating music or if they are solely focused on achieving a specific outcome. This insight helps shape our collaboration and ensures that their artistic journey remains fulfilling and rewarding. 3. Inspiration or dedication? By exploring the balance between inspiration and dedication, I aim to understand the depth of their commitment to their craft. Uncovering what drives them and fuels their creativity enables me to provide tailored support and guidance. 4. Authenticity or conformity? I inquire whether their music reflects their true voice and unique perspective or if they are swayed by external expectations. This question encourages introspection and fosters an environment where artistic authenticity can thrive. By asking these questions, I aim to uncover the core motivations and aspirations of prospective clients. This deeper understanding allows me to provide the guidance, support, and collaborative environment necessary to bring their musical vision to life. If you are seeking a music professional who genuinely cares about your artistic journey and is dedicated to helping you realize creative goals, look no further. Contact me today, and let's embark on a transformative musical collaboration that honors your unique voice and artistic expression.

  35. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  36. A: When searching for a provider like myself, I encourage customers to prioritize finding someone who genuinely wants to work with them. It's essential to choose a professional who appreciates and respects your unique artistic vision, rather than someone who solely works with individuals you aspire to be like. Authenticity is key in the music industry, and staying true to your own artistic identity is paramount. Look for a provider who values and embraces your individuality, someone who is committed to understanding your creative goals and bringing them to life. Additionally, seek out a professional who not only possesses the necessary skills and expertise but also shares your passion and enthusiasm for the project. Collaboration is a two-way street, and finding someone who aligns with your values and understands your artistic voice can greatly enhance the creative process. Remember, the right provider is someone who sees your potential and supports your artistic journey. They should empower you to express yourself fully and help you reach your musical aspirations while maintaining the utmost respect for your decisions. If you're looking for a provider who celebrates your uniqueness and is dedicated to bringing your artistic vision to fruition, look no further. Contact me today, and let's embark on a creative partnership that honors your artistic voice and creates something extraordinary together.

Then I moved to San Francisco and and started working full-time doing monitors for the only venue that wasn't owned by clear channel. I saw EVERYONE from side stage. There was a time when I could look at a Cochella poster and could honestly say that I had seen every band listed down to the last of the smallest print. THEN... I went to berklee to study guitar. Traditionally. To learn to read. To learn to Practice.

  39. Q: How would you describe your style?
