Interview with Andru Santos
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My last album "CARMESÍ". I rapped, sung, wrote and produced. I am especially proud of this project because I feel the aesthetics were on point and we were able to discover not only a unique and uniform sound, but also a concept developed through out the project.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment I'm working on a hip hop album, a pop EP and singles for multiple artists. I´m also making tracks for businesses and kids TV shows.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Alejandro Cornejo. A friend that I work often with, I trust him and know he will deliver a professional product.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital mostly because of genre. I also think it´s possible in this day in age to get to a similar place using only digital. All though I would love to try out analog in the future.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will do everything in my power to get you´re track to it´s full potential. I will deliver a finished song and we will take all the steps necessary to get there. I will respect you´re process and share mine to add value and help you express you´re ideas with clarity.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Being connected to artists and sharing perspective and different ways to endure a creative process.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Customers most commonly ask about how I work or what is my creative process. I proceed to explain to them my process: Start with a simple Idea, Melody or reference track. From there start adding sounds until I have an idea going. Sprinkle some vocals in while still adding or cutting out sounds. Define structure and arrangements. After that focus on sound design, pre mix and record final vocals. Edit vocals. Mix and Master.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Artists sometimes think producers can make an idea, voice or lyrics that sound awful sound great but the most important aspect of creating a good song is the initial material. We can only enhance that idea to it's full potential.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are you aiming for? Do you have a reference track? What sound are you attracted to? Which artists do you listen to? Do you have any ideas other than lyrics and melody? How open are you to modifying the initial idea?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be clear on what you're looking for. Have you're sound in mind as clear as possible. Use reference tracks. If you are looking to do something that stands out all of this is important. The clearer you are with you're vision the more producers can add to the idea.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Computer, Audio Interface, Headphones, Microphone, Notebook.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been playing music for more than 10 years. Stated in a garage band at 13 where I experienced my first songwriting and productions as a guitar player and singer. Later studied music and specialized in production and digital composition (Beatmaking, producing in DAW). Parallel to this I started my own career as an artist where I Rap, Produce and Sing.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Original, Organic, New Wave.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with Baby Keem because he is also an Artist/Producer like myself.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't impose ideas. Instead focus on expanding the artists idea to it's full potencial.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on Hip Hop/Urban and Pop music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I'm very good at creating a clear vibe, manipulating the songs energy until it makes you feel something, a clear emotion.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Fresh ideas, originality and perspective. I try to expand the initial idea to it's fullest without erasing the songs core.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Start with a simple Idea, Melody or reference track. From there start adding sounds until I have an idea going. Sprinkle some vocals in while still adding or cutting out sounds. Define structure and arrangements. After that focus on sound design, pre mix and record final vocals. Edit vocals. Mix and Master.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup is simple but efficient. I work with an Audient ID14 Interface at home and in the studio with a UAD Apollo Twin. For speakers KRK Rokit 5 or Adam a7x . Midi Alesis Keyboard and as a DAW I use Studio One and Logic Pro. For vocals Rhode NT1A for ideas and transporting but for final takes i'll use a Manly Reference.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Some musicians/artists that inspire me are Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West for their creativity. I also like Drake and The Weekends capacity of staying fresh and innovative with their sound. Somme music producers I like are Pharrell also for his innovative ideas and Nico Cotton (Argentinian producer) for his unique sound design.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Produce song from scratch. Includes defining a concept, structure, lyrics (in some cases), music, vocal production, melody, editing, mix, master.
