It was such a pleasure working with Diomer for two songs we’ve recorded. He emphasized with his words and actions his desire to provide an excellent product and experience for the artist during the recording, mixing, and mastering process. I was truly impressed with that intention and how it demonstrated itself in the product.

Great to be around and work with! Outside of music, an amazing and humble person. Inside of music, an amazing and humble person with bars lol. Very knowledgeable in his craft, someone you should trust with your work.

Interview with Diomer

  1. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  2. A: “What do you charge, and when can you get it done?” LOL. Reach out to me and I will work with you! :D

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: Study what your favorite artists and producers do, as well as whoever inspires them!

  5. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  6. A: I am especially proud of a song I mixed & mastered for BASEL because he said he worked with a grammy-nominated engineer for his previous release, but enjoyed our process and final results with Sad Summer "a million times more". That was amazing to hear, and the song overall is incredible.

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: I am currently working on my debut album! I also just finished up a few mixes for clients!

  9. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  10. A: Daramola and Ray Rock, to name a few. They are both incredible producers with a wealth of wisdom, and Daramola is also an amazing artist as well! He featured on a song of mine in 2019 and I would love to collaborate with him again in the future.

  11. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  12. A: Both! Now that I've worked with analog gear, I have experienced the wow factor that comes with it, but the flexibility of digital and working in the box makes recording and mixing much quicker overall for me. Having both covers all the bases!

  13. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  14. A: I will work until you love what you hear! I'm just as excited to hear the final mix as you are!

  15. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  16. A: Seeing and hearing how excited clients get when they are fully satisfied with their songs!

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: That mixing is quick and easy! Or that recording tracks is all it takes to put together a song! It takes a lot of mixing experience to be able to quickly mix a song with high quality, but even then, I'd rather take a healthy amount of time to ensure the best results.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: Who does this song remind you of? What do you hope for it to sound like? During the recording process, I ask all the time: how are you feeling? Before most takes I ask, "are you good?" I offer water, tea, anything I can provide at their request. I also ask any songwriters or producers who are with them for feedback if the person recording an instrument or vocals are okay with that.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Don't be afraid to ask me anything! This is your song and your vision. I'm here to bring them to life! And give me a few songs that either resemble your song, or what you hope for your song to sound like, if any. That makes a huge difference!

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: Macbook, Neumann U87, Apollo Twin X, MIDI keyboard, DT 770's.

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I began mixing for myself after going to a variety of recording studios and being disappointed with the final mixes of my songs. I didn’t know a thing about mixing at the time, but I just knew they were missing the polished sound of my favorite records. One of them even had a $250 thousand dollar studio with a vintage U87 and SSL board, but they didn't know my genres well, so I took matters into my own hands. A few years of learning via YouTube, tons of late nights experimenting with plugins of all kinds and studying professionals for countless hours has led me to where I am now.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: My style tends to be more eclectic, with depth. I love taking up the whole stereo image, and incorporating creative mixing techniques, when appropriate, to create moments throughout a song and give listeners an experience.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: I would like to work with Drake because he is extremely versatile and consistent with the music he makes, and I would love to see how he carries out his routine to be able to work with so many producers of different genres and generations.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Hip-Hop, Pop, Singer/Songwriter, and Acoustic music. But send everything my way!

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My desire to learn what the artist/musician wants & needs to bring the best out of their performance. A great performance will always make a final mix sound better!

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring musicality, artistry, and a safe space to explore your ideas.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Organization is huge for me when recording & mixing, so I'll label any tracks that need labeling and color code them, especially before recording sessions. Then I set up my bussing. As an artist myself, I know that trusting an engineer with the recording & mixing process is key, so in recording sessions I encourage artists and musicians to try new things and I let them record as many takes needed to get it right, and/or comp in front of them until they like what they hear. I also give suggestions regarding vocal production and arrangement if they'd like me to. I allow revisions and study references to ensure I'm delivering the best quality I can.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I go back and forth between working with analog gear and in the box. My analog recording chain for the past few months has been: Lauten Audio FC-387 > Heritage Audio HA-73 preamp > Warm Audio EQP-WA > Warm Audio WA-2A > Apollo Twin X Interface. I also use a Neumann TLM-102 into Unison Plugins (ex/Neve 1073, 1176, 2A). JBL 305 MkII monitors & Beyerdynamic DT 770's for headphones.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Derek Ali (MixedByAli) has inspired me a lot as a mix engineer to be creative and "see sounds" as Derek has mentioned. Looking at a stereo field as a canvas pushes me to mix with artistry in mind, and not just the technical side of mixing.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Recording, mixing and mastering clients' songs. Sometimes I only record their tracks to send off to other producers, but usually I'll mix and master them as well.
