We found Afonso on SoundBetter. He's the first engineer I've worked with that I've found through the internet only. He's the real deal. Super respectful, responsive, talented and not afraid to push the music in a new direction. A very fair price for stem mastering and the results were ideal. 10/10 would recommend for heavy music.

Worked with Afonso in both of Moonshade's albums, as well as many other musical projects. I highly recommend his work mainly due to his extensive technical knowledge, professionalism, and his very grounded and humane approach that brings out the best in every musician!

Interview with Afonso Aguiar

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Sotz - Popol Vuh album. Worked from the finishing stages of composing the songs as well as doing all the orchestration, production, recording and post production, mix and master.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Recording multiple projects at the moment including once again returning client Inhuman Architects as well as some more projects.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Alex Ramos - https://soundbetter.com/profiles/278815-alex-ramos Amazing drummer!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Analog if my budget was unlimited, digital for it's recallability and how easy it is to just load the plugin without any routing and limited amount of the hardware unit.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: Powerful mixes.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Everything, i love the whole process from recording to finalizing the master.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Reamping is included in the mixing!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That miracles happen during the mixing stage.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Song length, amout of instruments, real or midi drums?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Don't expect miracles, what you bring in is what you get out, good source material brings great mixes.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: desktop, PC screen, pair of monitors and my interface.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been working in music production and mix and mastering engineering for 4 years. Started my self thought career 10 years ago.

  36. A: I can bring hand (ear) tailored mixes for each project always taking the genre standards and expectations into account.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: For a mix and master i usually start by checking if everything is well edited, in time and in tune. After checking if everything is good to start working on the mix i start by laying basic tones first to get a basic mix going and from there on go from drums to bass to guitar and all the other instrumental elements that may exist and finish up with the vocals and proceed with mastering.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I mostly mix itb with the aid of real tube amps as well as my trustworthy axe fx and Helix rack for guitar and bass tones. I use a RME Fireface 802 for recording and a pair of Eve Audio SC207 for monitoring.
