I'm a music lover before anything else. My experience in music started off as a runner at prominent recording studios in the Hollywood and San Fernando Valley region. After working closely with some of the most talented mixing engineers in Hollywood for a period of 4 years, I found my passion for mixing records. My genre of experience is in hip-hop and pop.

Interview with Sanjay Mixer

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: Subtracting can do more to a production than adding more elements.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Adam Kagan (credits: Kanye West, Lorde, Swedish House Mafia etc.) is someone I have worked with and learnt so much from, I have and would continue to recommend him to my clients for mixing and mastering.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: It's always a mix of both. The speakers and plugins might be digital but the ears and grey matter that know how to work them is always analog. Apart from my recording chain where I always use an analog mic pre and compressor it's becoming harder to make a case for analog gear in my mixing workflow. The only piece of analog gear that I may use in my mixing workflow is a summing mixer.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: My promise is that I am willing to go to any length to shine light on my clients vision for the project.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: The thing I like most about my job is that 80% of the time that I'm working it does not feel like work.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: 1. Pro Tools rig with all them hard drives 2. UAD interface 3. Amphion Two18 Monitors 4. 1073 Mic Pre 5. Neumann U87ai Microphone

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: With Bangalore City, India being my hometown where I've spent most of my life. I was introduced to the option of being an audio professional much later than my counterparts in US and Europe. After completing an undergraduate degree in business and working as an event organizer in Bangalore, I chose to give up my career in events and moved to LA and enrolled in a prominent music school in Hollywood. Six years later, my passion for audio has only intensified. In these six years, I have been through the grind of being an intern/runner at studios, being a tech at studios and at a music school and a freelance recording engineer before setting up my own studio that i currently work from remotely.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: I would love to mix a record by any of these artists, some being Enny, Burna Boy, Cordae, Yung Raja, Jorja Smith to name a few.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: I typically work on hip-hop and hip-hop influenced genres. Although, I have mixed songs in styles ranging from afrobeat, pop to electronic music.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: I believe my strongest skill is my ability to translate my clients vision for their songs to my mixes without altering the soul and vibe of the production. Technically speaking, I have been told that I am especially good at managing the low frequencies and adding depth to vocals on my mixes.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: The first thing I do before I begin a mixing or mastering project is to chat with the artist/producer and get a sense of the vision they have for the project. Most times this would include references for the mixing style and energy they want the mix to possess. Then i listen to the rough mix at least a few times to get a feel of the sonic stage and placement of elements in the mix.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: After years of working in big budget recording studios in LA, I managed to distill the most important components of those studios into my home/pro studio set-up. Before bringing in racks of expensive analog gear and blowing up my budget on that, I spent quite a bit of time and money on ironing out the acoustical anomalies of my room. This includes an array of panels made from Owens 703 fiber glass with varying thicknesses around the listening position along with an angled ceiling cloud made from rockwool. When it came to gear, my mantra was keep it simple, but keep it super high quality. My main monitors are a pair of Amphion Two18's that sit on a pair of isoacoustic speaker stands. My secondary reference monitors are a pair of HS5's. My interface is a UAD Apollo MKII Quad with an expansion PCI Octo Card that drives the tons of UAD plugs in my sessions. This is combined with the UAD Ultimate bundle that I can not seem to live without. My computer specs: - MacOS 14.6 | i9 8 core cpu with 64 GB of DDR4 memory and 2x1TB m.2 ssds and two 6TB external back-up drives that has my entire system backed up on each drive for redundency. I also have a cloud backup of my entire system for added peace of mind. DAW: Pro Tools 2020 (and earlier versions) | Logic Pro X | Ableton Live 10 Suite My plugins: Soundtoys all bundle | iZotope music production bundle | Fabfilter everything bundle | Oxford Plugs | UAD Ultimate bundle | Soothe2 | u-he plugs | Elysia plugs Analog Hardware: - AML 1073 500-series Mic Pre | DBX 560A 500 series compressor - SPL Crimson3 Monitor Controller + Mic Preamps Mics: Neumann U87ai | Shure SM7b x 2 | Shure SM57 | Sonarworks Measurement Mic

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: My heros in this industry are mixing and mastering engineers who are also producers. Legends like Mike Dean, Bob Power, Derek "Mixedbyali" Ali, Mick Guzauski, Serban Ghenea and Jaycen Joschua are a few that i closely follow and admire. Their sonic signatures that they add to their mixes and their approach to gear and software is something that I constantly study. On the production side of music creation, I admire The Neptunes (Pharell Williams & Chad Hugo), Timbaland, Dr.Dre, Terrace Martin, Sounwave to name a few. I am a massive fan of their body of work and the emotion they are able to invoke in their productions. A mentor of mine Dave Issac once told me that "sometimes the role of a producer is to be a reducer", this is something that has stuck with me till date.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: The main type of work that I do for my clients is mixing their songs. For those clients who already have a working relationship with a mixing engineer, I play the role of a mastering engineer for their projects.
