Interview with Zuluaga Solutions

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Incune is a project that took the artist 15 years to conceptualize, I feel specially proud that he trusted that responsability to me.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: The best escenario for me is a hybrid escenario. Best of both worlds with its pros and cons.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: You will have a dedicated person giving the best of him to offer the best quality possible who will turn your abstract ideas into a tangible musical piece you´ll feel proud about.

  7. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  8. A: Usually, the stages of the production and what it´s done in each of them.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: Why is production/engineering required at all. Usually my first meeting with clients (specially newcomers and recording debutees) revolvs around explaining all the production/engineering process in detail to them.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: What do you expect to do with your music. My production desitions in an specific project are based mostly in this simple question.

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Whoever you hire, get to know the person, and be sure to have artistic chemistry with the service provider (producer/engineer).

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: Pragmatic, trying to find the most efficient solution to a problem.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Treat your clients´ projects as passionately and respectfully as if it was your own project. The client is trusting his art and dreams in you.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: I usually work with alternative variants of popular genres such as pop, rock, EDM, urban or latin.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: I start by listening the composition of the artist, usually recorded in a cellphone. I ask the artist for the references and influences they have, and I make a playlist of them. After a listening session I start visualizing how I want the project to sound. I work hand-by-hand with the artist, usually having creative sessions with them, I strongly believe in producer/artist teamwork.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: I work in a hybrid setup enviroment. I try to have the most pure audio chain possible when im tracking and listening, but I usually prefer all the creative perks working ITB offers me.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: Elton John is my biggest musical inspiration in my main instrument: Piano. Moogie Canazio was my mentor and one of my biggest examples of overcoming adversity. Chris Lord-Alge inspired me by his style and thinking outside-the-box in taking creative/technical desitions. Serban Ghenea inspired me in reframing my workflow.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: I usually offer an integral service, I guide the artist/musicians throughout the process of making a musical piece; starting from the most abstract concept, leading to a tangible, finished result.

  29. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  30. A: My market is mostly single focused, so im constantly starting and finishing amazing projects.

  31. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  32. A: Andres Mayo is my to-go Mastering Engineer in almost all ocassions.

  33. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  34. A: Being able to work with such amazing artists with different genre, styles, backgrounds and personal histories.

  35. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  36. A: My computer, my headphones, my slate mic, my main DAW (Cubase) and an interface.

  37. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  38. A: I´ve been doing this for over a decade. I´ve recorded, produced and/or mixed about 200 songs from all types of genres, styles and situations.

  39. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  40. A: Elton John: Since he has been my musical idol for almost all my life.

  41. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  42. A: Listening and adapting to my client neccesities

  43. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  44. A: My personal creative/technical escense, I think that is unique in all audio and music professionals.
