Hello!
Kurt Goebel here. I'm a writer/producer/mixer working mainly in the sync world. I'm open to produce your song, or to simply mix your song that is already produced with an ear for placement in Film & TV. I'm a multi-instrumentalist, with a great studio full of analog synths, as well as guitars and basses. You should hire me because I bring a unique perspective of knowing what music supervisors are looking for in Film & TV music. That knowledge and experience has proven to be incredibly valuable, and is a large part of my success.

Interview with Kurt Goebel

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Wrapping up an incredible song that I co-wrote with Matthew Perryman Jones, and Ruelle was a guest vocalist on it as well. I wrote a string quartet arrangement, and we tracked some of my vintage synths on it, and it is really special. Can't wait to get it out for the world to hear!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: wrapping up several songs with some new artists that will be pitched for placements.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I'm just getting into the community, but I'm looking forward to connecting with many of the creatives here.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Analog front end (preamps compressors,) digital in the box mixing for recall.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to put the effort into your music, that I put into my personal productions. At the end of the day, my name is on this, and I won't let anything out the door that I'm not completely proud of.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The process of creating something that previously didn't exist continues to inspire me, and the joy that music can bring to us collectively.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That anyone with a laptop and mic can do this.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What is your goal with this song? Are you going to release it? Is it for an EP or is it going to be pitched to sync? Are you currently working with a sync rep or publisher?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Use your ears, trust your gut, and know what you are wanting to accomplish. The more honed in you are on what you're going after, the smoother the process will be, and the happier you'll be with the end product.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Manley Ref Cardiod mic, Apollo Twin, Laptop, Juno-60, Jazz bass.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: Started playing piano at 6, studied piano as an undergrad, went on to receive a masters of music. Was a game composer early in my career. Was a creative director/composer at a music company that worked in the ad space. Helped launch a music sync company and was creative director there as well. I've been doing music professionally for 25+ years.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Polished, and nuanced.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Ryan Tedder. His sense of melody and phrasing is incredible.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Less is more in most cases. Three elements can sound huge versus tons of things fighting for the same space in an arrangement.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: It runs the gamet for sync, from swagger riff based stuff, to epic cinematic/orchestral, to fun uptempo pop, as well as emotional paired back songs for dramas etc.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skill is writing & producing top tier songs that consistently have a great track record for getting placed in film and TV.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: A perspective and ear for pro sounding production and mix, plus a lifetime of keyboard skills.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: For my sync writes, I usually have a track already prepped before the artist shows up, as we've decided on a clear direction. We co-write and track vocals that day. I finish production and mixing and we submit for placements.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: It's all centered around the UAD platform, with outboard hardware for Pre's and compression. Great mics by Gefell, Neuman, and Manley. Several amazing analog synths, complimented with your bread and butter guitars and basses. Access to grand piano and B3 if needed. No live drum tracking, but can be outsourced if necessary for the production.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Anything Ryan Tedder touches, Kaskade in the EDM world, Ruelle in the synch space, and many of the indie artists I work with in Nashville.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: composition/writing, producing and mixing.
