We were very happy and lucky to work with Gregoire on a music live TV show. He really took time to dive deeply in our project, to ask us for review, and to get the best out of our takes, into a really fine mix. Thanks and see you !

Interview with Grégoire Proust

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: At the moment, I'm working as a freelance Sound Engineer/Mixer/Producer for cinema, music recording and mastering projects for clients more in the Electronic, Hip-Hop/Rap and Rock genres.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: I'm quite new to the platform and I'm definitely going to add a list below in the next years for all the amazing talented people I will have the chance to meet via SoundBetter!

  5. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  6. A: Usually, customers are already working on a musical project and they hire me to help them achieve a specific sound they have in mind. To them, I would say that the clearest they are in their intentions and expectations, the better I can deliver the result in accordance to what they have in mind!

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: My style would be defined by being open-minded to every artist project, exploring through cultures and influences to provide a unique emotional experience by pushing the musical limits with each track!

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: I love Woodkid's musical universe: the mixture of Electronic and Classical music really give a unique vibe and emotion and he's very talented. Similarly, working with Thomas Bangalter of the Daft Punk would be a dream to me because I feel these artists really are open-minded and extremely talented overall!

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: I'm a big fan of artists who put together projects where they do all the job from producing, recording to mastering. They are usually indie artists and really have a huge touch on their projects. But it is also important to team work a lot because music is about passion but also sharing and collaborating!

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: I ask questions towards understanding the influences and style of the clients in order to better deliver the song(s) just the way they hear it/them in their head :)

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: I would take the essential pieces of gear (without counting the computer and cables), the ones that are renowned for being used on thousands of hits across the years: Teletronix LA-2A, Urei 1176; the most legendary preamp: Neve 1073; the most impressive speakers I have heard as of now: Quested HQ210 and the most versatile mic to me: the Neumann U67.

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: I followed studies in the Sound Engineering field while producing Electronic music on the side. Nowadays, I'm working as a freelance Sound Engineer/Mixer/Producer to help you in your projects!

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Produce and reference a lot, it is to me the key to get better!

  21. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  22. A: The project I featured on my profile is an unplugged version of French band Little Animal's "Everyday". I had all roles from Recording to Mastering Engineer which gives a pretty good example of my touch!

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: I'm usually speaking a lot with artists, mostly during the pre-production to really get the best understanding of the expectations and influences of their project. Then I'm investing time in studying the gear, musical requirements that are needed, and then use them the way I feel it corresponds to the style and mood! I'm using reference tracks a lot, and I offer 3 free revisions to ensure 100% client satisfaction!

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: You can hire me for music production, recording, mixing, mastering services for your projects, whether it be about music, cinema, television, podcasting...

  27. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  28. A: I am fully motivated, I respect your project and your vision and I will work hard for it!

  29. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  30. A: I am fully motivated, I respect your project and your vision and I will work hard for it!

  31. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  32. A: I promise to give everything I have in my power, all my motivation to make your track feel how you want it to feel!

  33. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  34. A: Listening to your projects, discovering ideas, collaborating!

  35. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  36. A: I've set up a hybrid home studio as I think both have pros. The analog world can bring life to a project and the digital world can perform precision tasks that were impossible to achieve before. It's up to the clients to decide what color they want to have to their sound, based on the genre or feel.

  37. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  38. A: I think people should understand we don't do this job for free even if it is our deepest passion. Also I noticed that a lot of people think that our job is only technical and about gear whereas we truly have an artistic impact over projects we work on; that's what's so interesting to me!

  39. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  40. A: Based on my experience, I've done mostly Electronic & Hip-Hop music for now but I'm open to all genres and I've had a few assistant roles for Classical, Pop, Rock, French Punk, Blues, Rockabilly & Reggae music projects.

  41. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  42. A: Listening to and understanding your art will be my top priority and I'll work hard in order to help achieve your vision!

  43. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  44. A: I aspire to help you bring the emotions you want to convey in your tracks as much as I can!

  45. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  46. A: I'm working in a hybrid home studio with a Mackie 32 8 2 to help you achieve an analog vintage sound or just an in-the-box mix with Pro Tools and top-notch plugins from renowned brands such as Universal Audio, Waves Audio, Acustica Audio, Soundtoys, iZotope, Celemony, IK Multimedia, Slate Digital, Valhalla & Brainworx. I've got Focal Alpha 50 Evo speakers which are my professional bass-reflex monitoring for 3 reasons: dynamics, tonal balance neutrality and sonic coherence. I invest a lot of time knowing the gear I use so that I can better focus on helping you achieve your artistic views. The only gear that lacks for now to me is more analog gear such as compressors and multi-effects to add some more color to specific tracks.
