Interview with Nato Lopez

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: I would say this...and I learned this from a legendary producer, writer and artist named Kenneth Edmonds "Babyface". Sometimes producers are stuck on songs to trying to add the most to every beat they're creating and it'll take a while to complete a song. In which I had that experience before while working with him...and after a while he just said "do you know when I know a record is done?, its done when I can't think of anything to add anymore or if I'm stuck thinking of what to add....that means there's probably nothing to add anymore and you're done" now it doesn't seem like much but as producer we get stuck all the time and sometimes we don't know its done, when it really is done and then we'll end over producing are songs. As far as mixing/mastering tips...use your ears don't rely on graphics and visuals on you plugins on the computer or do what other people are doing from YouTube... use and trust your ears because every song is different and needs different attention.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: I typically work in pop and Hip Hop/R&B. Although I've done tons of EDM and house records as well.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: I would say my strongest set skill is mixing and mastering followed by production/production arrangement.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: I think what I bring to a song is knowledge and experience for one, Secondly, I just don't turn knobs, I'm a creative person from the mixing, mastering and production standpoint. What I mean I listen to the music, I reference other songs similar and I try to capture a sound and feeing to lock listeners in. I've been able to work with the best and learn from them and take a little bit from them to mix with my own twist to bring out the best of a record.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: My typical work process varies based on the project. If I'm mixing, I love to listen to other mixed music first in the genre of the record I'm about to work on. Get inspired by that to creatively mix. Mixing is very much creative as much as it is balancing and processing. This procedure is the same for Mastering. As far as production, I always like to push the envelope and create new sounds and styles. Production is creating a audio movie with multiple emotions you can feel, it's more than making beats it creating a feeling the listeners can adapt to and relate...Honestly the same goes into my mixing and mastering, I want create a feeling or remedy the listeners can relate to.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: I am running Apple Mac studio computer. My DAW's are Pro Tools and Logic Pro. My gear consist of an analog Neve 1073, Tube Tech CL-1B Compressor and Mic is Neumann U87. My interface is UAD Apollo 8/UAD Twin MKII. Finally my speakers are ADAM Audio S3H and ADAM Audio Sub12.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: I would say I'm inspired by an array of talent, I love all genres of music. As a professional myself I've worked with some of the best the industry offers. vocalists and writers (Tish Hayman, Jean Baptiste, Sevyn Streeter, Ty Dolla $ign, Stacey Barth, Bonnie McKee and Pricilla Renea) inspire me the most based gluing the music with the writing to make something great. As far as producers I would say working along side will.i.am, Pharrell, Dj Snake, Diplo, Benny Blanco, Swiss Beats and Ryan Dj Replay Buendia inspire me the most creatively to produce.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: The most common type of work that I do is, Mixing, Mastering and Music Production. I also do tons of vocal production and music arrangement. I started as recording engineer 15 years ago so I can also track vocals and instrumentation.
