Hi, I'm an electronic music producer (aka "Ray Becker"), Mixing & Mastering Engineer, and vinyl music enthusiast who cares about the quality and value of the underground music industry.

After studying in 2 conservatories near Venice and a Music Production Academy in Naples I got into the career producing House music as a member of the duo "Instant Hauz": since the first track I started signing contracts with a London-based label and some east European labels. After a few more contracts with my main project "Ray Becker" I started Mixing for other artists and for labels.

Interview with Matteo Cavaliere

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: Everything started when I was a child and some family friends were recording studio owners in my city. From time to time I had the opportunity to step inside and live some special childhood memories and emotions that drives me still today when I get into my studio. I studied in 2 conservatories "saxophone" and "film & electronic music production", then got more specifically into the electronic music production academy in Naples. I've produced many songs with the "Instant Hauz" duo and as "Ray Becker": I signed contracts with London and Amsterdam-based record labels such as Eton Messy Records, House Cookin' Records, Flamingo Records, and Crosstown Rebels, also acclaimed from Believe Music UK, and Berlin House Music.

  3. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  4. A: It's a difficult question to answer this one, I would love to work with so many artists that I admire for their music that I don't know where to start. I would love to work for Marco Carola, Josh Butler, Dennis Cruz, Guti, Jamie Jones, Proudly People, Toman, Chris Stussy, Shit Robot, and many many others (the list would be very long).

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: The crucial part that makes a successful mix is to understand how to control the low end, reduce the muddiness, cut resonant frequencies, find the right balance between tracks, and know how to set reverb and delays properly.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: I usually work on two sides of the electronic music genres: the HipHop, Trap, and Pop side, and the Underground electronic music scene such as House, Deep House, Minimal House, Deep Tech, Techno, and Hard Techno.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: Mixing, Mastering, and recording vocals are my strongest skills. I feel really comfortable with vocal tuning also.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: When I work on a song I want to respect the original sound idea of the client bringing also clarity, balance, and punch. However, I believe in using also some creative mixing techniques to make fit the mix to the song's mood.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: After the recording session, I always wait at least a day before starting the Mixing session because I have to "reset" my ears. Then, according to the artist's request and reference tracks, I start the mixing session. When I've finished this session I generally wait 1 day to "reset" again and listen after with "fresher" ears and then, if it's confirmed, I start with the Mastering session which is a little bit faster. After this process, I do another last check and then, if it's everything ok, I deliver the Mastered track to the client.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: The most important part of my studio is the environment and the quality speakers. A really good speaker placed in a well-designed and acoustically-treated room makes a difference in music production. However, I own top-quality preamps such as Millennia, Chandler Limited, Audient, a professional AD/DA converter Aurora 16, compressor, vocal chain, noise filters, eq, lexicon reverbs, and some synths and drum machines.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: Most of the time I Record, Mix, and Master songs for the artists.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: Every time you find yourself working with a lot of different personalities, you hear tons of different sounds, musical combinations, and sonic environments, and that avoid you from make you stuck in a "standard" way of processing sounds when approaching the mix. That's the magic of making music, every time you have to adapt yourself to a new world that gives you a new perspective.
