Session Keyboards, Piano

Jake Coffin on SoundBetter

I am an experienced songwriter and session keyboards/piano player (15 years). I specialize in blending jazz and classical style piano-playing with pop or alternative rock sounds. I’ve composed 6 original musicals that span multiple genres, making me highly versatile in my compositions. I thrive in collaboration and am committed to excellence.

I began music production and composition as a kid, on a whim. It was a “band practice” for a band that had hardly formed. Just me and the guitarist showed up on that “band practice” day, but it turned into one of the best jam sessions I’ve had. Before then, I had yet to experience the sheer love of MAKING music—not just regurgitating music from paper or tablature, but creating music out of thin air. It was breathtaking. And habit-forming. It turned out that this guitarist had a home studio set up at his place, and we were able to experiment with our musical ideas by laying down multiple tracks. Suddenly, we were cranking out song after song. We wrote 100 songs that first year in the “studio.”
It seems I’ve been playing the piano and the keyboard my whole life. I’ve always played the piano as a way to compose music. I tell stories on the keyboard. With my great assortment of VST instruments, I’ve found gazillions of other perspectives and other characters to add to these stories.
So why hire me? Because I don’t think many people know or remember that music-making is storytelling. And that’s an important understanding to have in order to be a reputable session player or a songwriter. Any good storyteller knows collaboration is key. Storytellers know about dynamics. About author intent. They see the big picture and the tiny details. Let me help you tell your musical story.
