Programming, instrumentation, sounds and arrangement all exist to serve the song as a whole and to display the artist in the best possible light. If the production is amazing but it is wrong for the song, then the producer hasn't done their job well.
As a mix engineer, my philosophy is similar to my production philosophy: The song always comes first. A dynamic, punchy mix that highlights the best of the song is always what I aim for.
