Interview with Brandon Alexander
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: d love to work with Tyler, the Creator, SZA, and Kendrick Lamar. Each of them brings a completely unique voice and creative vision to their music — they don’t follow trends; they set them. I really value artists who take risks, push boundaries, and still know how to craft timeless, memorable records. All three of them have an incredible feel for storytelling, sonic experimentation, and emotional depth — the kind of artistry that inspires me to grow and innovate as a producer.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One of the best production tips I can share is: get your ego out of the way and let the song write itself. Instead of forcing ideas, allow the record to guide you — let the speakers speak. Some of the best music happens when you stop overthinking and simply follow the natural direction the song wants to go. Stay open, stay present, and serve the music first.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I primarily work on Hip Hop and R&B, focusing on crafting rich, emotionally-driven productions that blend hard-hitting drums with soulful melodies and textures. Whether it's modern, experimental, or rooted in classic sounds, I aim to bring a timeless feel to every track while staying true to the artist’s vision.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: What I bring to a song is a refined sense of taste and musicality shaped by over 12 years of experience in the studio — including time at Record One in LA with Dr. Dre and other legendary producers. My strongest skills lie in drum programming and sound design; I’m intentional about creating rhythms and textures that not only knock but feel alive and unique to each record. Clients often tell me my chord progressions have become a signature sound they love — I focus on emotion and movement in the harmonic structure to make tracks feel rich and memorable. On top of that, I bring experience in vocal arrangement, mixing, mastering, and songwriting. Every element I contribute is about elevating the artist’s vision while crafting something timeless and sonically compelling.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: What I bring to a song is a refined sense of taste and musical direction that’s been shaped by over 12 years of producing records and being in rooms with some of the industry’s best — including sessions at Record One in LA with Dr. Dre and other legendary producers. That kind of exposure has helped me develop a sharp ear for what makes a record truly stand out. I approach every track with a unique perspective, especially in how I program instrumentals — prioritizing feel and human musicianship over rigid MIDI input. Beyond production, I bring deep experience in vocal arrangement, mixing, mastering, and songwriting. My goal is always to serve the artist’s vision while elevating the record to a level that feels intentional, emotional, and sonically undeniable.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My process always begins with understanding the artist and their vision. I like to start with a phone or video call to get a clear sense of the project, the goals, and to make sure we’re a good creative fit. Once we agree to move forward, we enter the pre-production phase where ideas are shaped and direction is established. From there, I begin the production process — this can be done collaboratively with the client (remotely or in person), or independently if that’s their preference. Once we’re both happy with how the record sounds production-wise, I move into the mixing stage if that's part of the scope, followed by mastering once the mix is finalized. At delivery, I typically provide the final mastered track, a clean version if needed, a show mix, and full stems — ensuring the artist has everything they need for release, performance, or future remixes.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup is designed to blend the warmth and character of classic hardware with the precision and flexibility of modern digital tools. I monitor through PMC 62s, Auratone 5Cs, and CLA-10s to ensure my mixes translate across all systems. My audio interface chain includes the UAD Apollo X16 and x8p, running into a MacBook Pro 14" M1 Pro Max for maximum efficiency and stability. For hardware, I work with a collection of iconic synths and samplers including the MPC 3000, Ensoniq ASR-10, Roland JUNO-106, and the Minimoog Model D — each adding a unique flavor to my productions. My preamp of choice is the Neve 1073OPX, which brings world-class analog warmth to vocals and instruments. In terms of software, I work across Ableton Live 12, Logic Pro 11, Pro Tools, and FL Studio, depending on the project’s needs. My plugin arsenal includes UAD, Waves, Plugin Alliance, iZotope, Melodyne, Decimort, and more — giving me full control over mixing, mastering, and sound design. I monitor critically using Focal Clear Mg Pro headphones to ensure every detail is dialed in, whether I'm in the studio or on the move.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm deeply inspired by pioneers like Pharrell Williams, Timbaland, and Darkchild — producers who revolutionized the sound of modern music through their innovation, rhythm, and signature style. I also draw heavy inspiration from Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones, not just for their timeless music but for their attention to detail, musicality, and ability to blend genres while still creating universally impactful records. Their work reminds me that great production is just as much about emotion and storytelling as it is about sound design.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of work I do for my clients is creating high-quality, industry-ready music production and custom instrumentals tailored to their unique sound and vision. Whether it's building a full track from scratch, enhancing a demo, or crafting sample-based beats, or original hip-hop and R&B records. I focus on delivering sonics that are polished, modern, and emotionally impactful. I also frequently provide mixing services to help artists achieve a clean, balanced, and radio-ready final product.
