Alex Harper

Producer/Mixing Engineer

Alex Harper on SoundBetter

Alternative music producer/mixing engineer who wants to turn your ideas/demos into a finished project. I have a background in music theory and music tech, and love to work with any and all artists who have a vision they need help creating.

I have been working with music for 8 years now, with my love for it continuously growing. I love my work and am very passionate about getting the music I work on to sound exactly how the artist intends it to. I love working with live instruments, but I know my way around midi and can be flexible when it comes to genres I work with, ranging from hardcore punk all the way to a nice Jazz swing tune.

Interview with Alex Harper

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I was a part of a couple of releases for a band during a studio internship of mine. My main role was to make everything easier for the engineer, and make the artists comfortable. I use this knowledge now to make sure my artists are comfortable with asking questions about the mixing process, as well as to know that I am a person just like them who just enjoys music.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently working on recording my own band for some upcoming single releases.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital mostly, as it's affordable and easily accessible. Analog is a privilege that is great, but not for everyone.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I will get your projects to sound how you want them in your head.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I love that I get to work with artists every day, and get to see many different types of art that come from everyone. Art is the most beautiful thing in the world, and I am just happy to be a part of the process.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: I have a few amounts of credits, as I am just getting into music engineering as a job; however, I have worked with many diy artists over the years and have a lot of experience.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: Whats your budget, and how many songs/projects do you want to complete?

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Be clear with your project vision, and dont be worried about sounding "bad." Its a process that sometimes has to be trusted until the end.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Laptop, UA Volt interface, bus compressor, headphones, and a tape machine.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I have just graduated with an associate's degree in music, as well as have gotten a certificate in music engineering and certification in Pro Tools. I have been working with music for around 8 years.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: I would describe my style as polished, yet gritty and natural.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: I would love to work with any artists under the "emo" umbrella. I am a part of a emo project titled "Strange Noise," and my love for the genre is enormous.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: My biggest music production tip is to let the music lead. I follow a set process when it comes to mixing, however, if the project calls for it, I will always do what the song needs.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: I usually work with alternative bands or heavier music, but am well-versed in hip hop and pop as well.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: My strongest skill currently is my mixing and recording skills.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I bring my passion into every song, making sure to get into the nitty gritty details during editing to make sure everything sounds exactly as the artist wants. However, if it is wanted, I always have some creative input to give and love to be a part of the writing process as well.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: I use my recording/editing skills to bring a song from an idea or a demo to a fully fledged project.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I currently run LUNA as my DAW, and run that through my Kali Audio LP6's connected to my UA volt 476. I am currently fully in the box, but plan to expand.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: Bands such as Hot Mulligan and Knocked Loose are my inspirations, and one of the producers I look up to is Will Putney.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: The most common work I do is mixing and mastering music, though I am also a producer who will help keep ideas flowing.
