Interview with Israel Onyach
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: En Route- my debut album as half of the dynamic duo- Watendawili. This project was the first time my talents as a singer-songwriter, bassist, guitarist and producer were all put to use on one project
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on singles right now. I'm part of a duo called Watendawili and we're pushing more music for our fans. I'm also in and out of writing camps right now, writing for various artists.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My computer, my Lewitt lct 540 microphone, my headphones, my soundcard and my semi-acoustic guitar.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Off the top of my head. I have to say James Fauntleroy, he’s a super talented songwriter and I’m super I’d learn so much from him. I'd also love to be in studio with Pharrell Williams, his innovative nature has always been inspiring to me.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Never shy away from experimenting. There are no rules to this game
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I’ll give you international standards when it comes to my delivery
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I get to express myself on a daily
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I’ll take a lot of time to complete the project. Like I said, I’m super fast.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: 1. What was your thought process while coming up with this? 2. Will you release this? 3. I’m big on publishing. What do you think about royalty splits on this project? There’s no right or wrong answer
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Don’t shy away from telling me what inspired the initial idea. I love stories and knowing the genesis of things.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I was born to be an artist. Always. I’m an avid creative and music happens to be the avenue I express myself in effortlessly. I’ve been a professional musician for 9 years now.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I have massive range. But right now, I have to say Afro-Pop
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Most times Pop and dance. I have to emphasize though, I’m super super versatile, so I can sing folk today and tomorrow I’ll be singing reggae
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I’m a super songwriter. I’d also have to say, my imagination is unmatched, which makes it easy for me to create.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring dynamism. If it’s songwriting I’d say I bring clever and witty lyrics. For production, I’m super experimental and that’s what sets me apart.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: If it’s songwriting, I normally start by listening to the beat once, then start free styling melodies while listening the second time around then finally decipher lyrics I can hear from the melody ideas and write the song. That’s what makes me a super fast writer
