Golden Mile Music on SoundBetter

My reviews speak for themselves. Trumpets and valve trombone recorded with a Neumann tube mic and Rupert Neve preamp into a Prism Lyra interface. My production music albums are here http://www.goldenmilemusic.com Also see my Blast Ska Brass pack with Manike on Loopmasters

When I'm not driving lorries I produce music and record horns at home

The main trumpet is a Schilke B1L with a solid silver bell. It has a rich, choclate tone when played softly but can light up and scream as well. It's the film music sound, the commercial sound for modern recordings.

I also have a 70s Getzen Eterna Doc Severinson for a more legit sound. It's a versatile trumpet and a very loud honker really made for big band lead.

Stacking harmonies with 2 different horns and different mouthpieces gives a more realistic section sound.

The microphone is a Neumann U87ai condenser converted into a tube U67 with the Max Kircher kit. Mic preamp is a Neve 1073LB 500 series, then a Prism Lyra interface. Sometimes using a Tubetech CL1B as a tracking compressor.

If you have brass lines in mind I can copy them from midi brass or a keyboard part, or I can write brass and work out harmonies myself, stack them with two trumpets so it sounds like two players.

I'm not the best trombone player tbh and it's a valve trombone, it's ok in a section

I'll make revisions until you are happy with your horns.

Would love to hear from you. Click the contact button above to get in touch.

Interview with Golden Mile Music

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Retro Electric - The first production music album by me and Alex Young. Released by Bibliotheque Music. We wanted to produce some library music and get it published so we made an album and did everything we could to make it the best we were capable of. We sent it to some publishers and were astounded that it was snapped up. Production music is now gradually becoming my full time career.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Co-writing minimal comedy slapstick tracks for a production music album with Alex Young. Mixing a punk album for the Glory and a latin rock album for Bany from Venezuala. Two finished vintage cartoon style albums are about to be released on Lovely Music and Gargantuan.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I don't currently know anyone else on Soundbetter

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. Its 2020. Analogue sounds great and there's the hands on workflow. Digital is quick, versatile, limitless. It also sounds great in its own way. The low noise. I would do EQ cuts with Fabfilter Pro Q3 and boosts with a Rupert Neve 551 or SSL 611. Hardware compressors can't be beaten

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will spend as much time as it takes to get the work to mine and the customer's satisfaction. I have high standards, my work will be well played and well edited, in tune, in time, fit naturally into the track

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: It's incredibly fulfilling and energizing

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Look at the reviews, happy customers says it all

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I started trumpet at school. I have been producing and mixing for a lot of years, quite a lot of production music published now - electro swing, ska, dub, reggaeton, basement, klezmer, New Orleans, vintage cartoon music, latin, mariachi, movie trailers

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: My style is tuneful, authentic, quirky, unpredictable, analogue-sounding, spacious, quality,

  19. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  20. A: Mr Oizo because there are no rules.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Read everything you can find about music production. Use mid/side to saturate the sides for width and separation, centre the bass by cutting the sides up to 50hz. Bit of 800hz for bass definition, maybe cut the guitars a little at 800hz in the middle and boost the same amount in the sides to compensate, it lets the bass peep through, I like using mid/side stereo, that's my ninja trick. put a little boost on the kick drum at 80hz, little cut on bass at 80hz, gives separation between kick and bass

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: In production music it's often vintage styles that include trumpet eg. New Orleans jazz, mariachi style klezmer film style music, but can be anything really, you never know what the next Soundbetter job will be or from where in the world

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: Receive the mp3 of the track, import it in Reaper, add trumpet and valve trombone, edit, render stems, send a link to the zip file or upload on Soundbetter on time. Complete any revisions on time

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: It's a hybrid analogue/digital home recording/ mixing/ producing/ editing setup. I only buy high end gear so it has taken time to build up but now, everything is high end. Mics, preamps, mixer, compressors, EQs, reverb, monitors.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: Writing and recording trumpet and valve trombone. I also do mixing and make production music for TV, internet, adverts, couple of film trailers. I put vocal editing in my profile recently but i haven't had any via Soundbetter yet : )

  31. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  32. A: Ennio Morricone for the no boundaries approach to music and the incredible emotion

  33. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  34. A: Can you do this? Yes.

  35. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  36. A: My cheeks do not bulge out like a bullfrog

  37. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  38. A: Anything that is not clear from the brief

  39. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  40. A: An MPC, Moog Sub Phatty, TR909, One of those array-type sound systems like you see on eg. Glastonbury main stage and a Roland RE-201.

  41. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  42. A: Good knowledge of intervals, great trumpet tone

  43. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  44. A: I bring the knowledge of music of an accomplished musician with the polish you can get from high-end equipment.
