Interview with Blaiden
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I'm particularly partial to is this upcoming song my friend has called S**t Starters. I didn't make or mix the beat, but I mixed the vocals and mastered it. Had to do some funky "reverse polarity" work to isolate the elements that didn't get exported as stems, but it turned out great in my opinion. Those first 8 bars I wrote are some of my best material to date.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Several projects from artists I'm close to as well as a solo project. Just trying to climb the ranks.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog will always sound better, but digital will always be more convenient.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise that I will do my best to not only satisfy my clients, but in turn try to make their song the best it can be.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I actually worked towards something I'm decently competent in.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: How do you get mixes and masters in on the same day? A: Usually I get a rough mix in, step away and come back with fresh ears, finish up the mix, come back later, and master it. Even if I averaged at a gig a day on this page, that's pretty light. Plus, the second revision is free, so that should heavily negate any undesirable mixing.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that I can fix a bad song. I will do my absolute best to see to it that your song is the best it can be, but my hands are a bit tied if you recorded on AirPods over bluetooth into your iPod Nano running BandLab. Sorry.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Does this mix need anything special or extra added to it, or is it just a standard job?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be specific with what you want first and foremost. If you don't know what you want, I can help you, but it requires communication. I'm happy to help your song be the best it can be, but in order for that to happen you have to be upfront!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, mic, preamp, xlr cables and my Cloudlifter. Exactly what I'd need to die on a desert island with at least a couple 10/10's.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been at this for 7 years
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My mixing / mastering style can be whatever the track needs. If it needs to feel polished and sanded down for radio play, that's doable. If it needs to be rugged and muddy like it came off an underground mixtape, this is also 100% workable. My production work is definitely more rhythm centric, with heavy emphasis on the 808 and drums. My writing can be a bit dense. Think MF DOOM's rhymes with Slim Shady's dark wit over a contemporary hip hop / trap flow.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: MF DOOM (RIP). The greatest to ever do it.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: LEARN MUSIC THEORY!!! It can't be stressed enough, the difference in my work before and after is day and night.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip Hop, Rap, Trap, EDM, Electronic, Techno, Hybrid Trap, Trap Metal, Screamo, Emo Rap, Sad Rap.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing is definitely my strongest skill, followed by mastering and production / remixing.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I try to bring as much as I can with caution not to overstep. It's the client's song, and I'll work on it in their image. If they need me to bring something extra to the song, I'm more than happy to.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Mixing: Importing stems into my project template and applying effects as needed (EQ, compression, saturation, reverb, etc.) Mastering: Importing the song file and applying effects as needed (EQ, saturation, maximizer, limiting, etc.) Production: Usually starting off with basic drums to keep time, a bass line to improve off the drums and vice versa, followed by chord building and melodies and mixing until I have something that's great. Remixes: Usually start off with the acapella. Everything else is basically the production process, along with making sure notes are in key and the timing is right. Writing: I usually just think of a statement that sounds cool, think of some rhymes for the last few syllables that similarly sound cool, string them together for a stanza, repeat as many times as needed.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Main laptop as the heart of the studio. An SM7b running into a Cloudlifter and a Focusrite preamp, as well as a pair of studio monitors and headphones. Nothing too crazy, I just like keeping my workflow in the laptop for convenience.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: MF DOOM, Lil Ugly Mane, Earl Sweatshirt, Mac Miller, JPEGMafia, Danny Brown, Death Grips, Janet Jackson, Aesop Rock, Tyler The Creator, Drake, J Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, OutKast, The Notorious B.I.G. / Biggie Smalls, Tupac / 2Pac, The Roots, Lauryn Hill, Beastie Boys, The Pharcyde, J Dilla, Dr Dre, Viktor Vaughn, Wu Tang, A Tribe Called Quest, Bad Bunny, Skrillex, Deadmau5, Ice Spice, Cardi B, Playboi Carti, Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat, Lil Nas X, Yabujin, 50 Cent, JAY-Z, Nas, Lil Wayne, Griselda, Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliott, Kid Cudi, Xzibit, Nelly, NWA, Bad Meets Evil, D12, Kanye West, Injury Reserve, Daft Punk, Gorillaz, Vince Staples, KIDS SEE GHOSTS, Black Thought, Michael Jackson, Big Pun, Big L, Mobb Deep, Prodigy, Bone Thugs n Harmony, Quadeca, Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, DAngelo / D'Angelo, DJ Shadow, I could keep going...
