kate is hands down one of my favorite voices and songwriters out there. her tone is flowing and emotive, her melodies are inventive and beautiful, and her production is clean and rich, ranging from heavy and brooding to light and ethereal. she is amazing to work with--she is fast and professional on top of being warm and funny and a generally wonderful human being. anyone would be lucky to have a piece of kate mcgill on their track!!!

Interview with Kate McGill

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Jack Haigh, incredible session guitarist.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: Enthusiasm, excellent communication and stand-out vocal editing.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: Literally all of it. I still, after 12 years, can't believe I get to wake up and do this every day. I count myself endlessly lucky.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: If you're imagining a certain melody or lyric in your head, what are they? Are there any particular notes you'd like me to hit at certain times? Do you have something specific you'd like me to write about?

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Just drop me a message! I'd love to see if I can help make your music come to life in any way. Maybe I'll be what you're looking for or maybe I won't, but hey - we get to cross paths briefly as humans on this wonderful Earth and I'm down for that.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: Honestly... as long as I had a rubber-bridge guitar and a yamaha U3 upright piano (with felt, of course) - I'd be happy!

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I have been making music since 2007, and managed to make a career out of it from 2011 onwards. I've had publishing deals, record deals etc... but am the most at home when I can create with no restrictions or timelines. I've been toplining for only a short amount of time, but the joy and ease I feel when doing it really leads me to believe that this might be where my career goes next.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: Kinda like Billie Eilish. Super breathy, but with heartfelt and honest delivery. And grit when necessary!

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: It's pretty basic, but panning harmonies/double tracking left and right just makes everything sound *chef's kiss*

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: My heart and home has always been folk/indie folk music, but my love for drum and bass/EDM music comes a very close second.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: Either writing melodies or vocal editing!

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: Endless enthusiasm, authentic and honest delivery of lyrics, a distinctive voice and a love for all things music.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: I like to listen to a track on repeat, loud and proud, on my KRKs first; and sing a bunch of melodies that come into my head. Ones that I really like, I'll record on my phone as I'm going. Then I'll put the headphones on and narrow down the melodies. Once I'm confident it's strong/hooky enough, I'll get to work on lyrics. Normally, there's a word or a phrase that sticks out in the creating process that I can springboard off of. Then I'll start recording vocals section by section, to make sure my timing and tuning is on point. Then comes the fun of vocal comping and tuning! The achievement I feel at the end is unparalleled.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: My studio is in my home, so I can get to work at the drop of a hat! My equipment comprises of: Neumann U87 Microphone, Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 Interface, DBX 286S Mic Preamp/Processor, Rokit 5 KRK Speakers, DT 770 PRO Headphones, Yamaha P45 Digital Piano (for MIDI) and a Shure SM7B Microphone
