Interview with Satellyte

  1. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  2. A: My strongest skill is my ability to create numerous toplines for the same beat/ song to give a client many revisions until they are satisfied. Additionally, my full vocal range spans over four octaves, so if a client requests some bass vocals for a demo, I am able to sing virtually whatever they request. However, in the fifth octave I can only sing in head voice or falsetto and that is where I employ my female vocalist for demos.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: My debut release as Satellyte, 'Everlast' I just released with a teaser and music video, and am very proud of because I wrote, produced, arranged and performed this song myself, while collaborating with others through the process. It is my first time releasing original music myself and I cannot wait to release more I am currently working on.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: Right now I am working on a few things. I am currently producing a lo-fi album entirely produced by myself, as well as two songs. One of these is a ballad and one is a hyperpop song. I love experimenting with different types of music and collaborating with others to produce more original music.

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: In my debut release track I worked with Mella on soundbetter as the featured vocalist in this track with me. She was brilliant and determined to achieve the goal I had with the song. Through our collaboration and performance together we achieved a final product that I am very proud of. So I would recommend her for a versatile, professional and hardworking soprano vocalist.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Digital. I have no experience working with analogue gear (I am only 21). However, my experience with digital gear has been great and I would love to experiment with analogue gear, given the opportunity.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: I promise unlimited revisions to clients in services until their goal is reached, or it is clear that their vision is unclear or unattainable within my ability.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: The freedom of creativity it involves. I take this seriously and professionally, however I struggle to call it work or a job because it does not feel like work. I love doing this and connecting with other artists and producers to collaborate and make their musical dreams come true. I feel we both benefit from the process just as much as each other.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: I have not been doing this long, however, clients commonly ask for lyrics to be added onto a topline they fall in love with. I am more than happy to add this into a package and focus on the sound of the lyric fitting the topline, just as much as the client directed message and feel.

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: That anyone can do it. To write songs and toplines you need a lot of experience writing music and listening to music to generate appropriate and great melodies and lyrics. Also, you have to be a competent enough singer to then convey the magic in from writing to vocals.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: I ask for more information generally. I really want a clear view of their vision initially because some of the best toplines come from first impression hearing the beat or inspiration track. If my work is guided, I can produce better results. If I am not provided with adequate direction, a client cannot expect what they do not specifically ask.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: My biggest advice for a customer would be to provide me with as much information as possible. If you give me limited information, it will be harder for me to understand your vision. Expect very kind and fast communication and know that I am just human like you and I will do my very best to achieve your vision.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: I only think I would need three items (excluding necessary items for survival) they would be: 1.) Notebook 2.) Something to record myself 3.) A spotify account XD This would allow me to listen to music, write, and record music which I feel would keep me sane. No matter where you are in the world or what you are doing, music can always find and connect you with happiness.

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: As much as I would love this to be my main career path, I am fairly new to it. I am a graduating university student, studying psychology aiming to work as a clinical Geropsychologist. I believe that in life you need a balance between work and creativity or work and hobby. For me I love music, writing, drawing painting (anything creative). I am only young, but my career dream in life is to work as a clinical Geropsychologist and have music production and toplining for artists, advertisers and cinema/ game companies as my second job/ hobby and aspiration.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: I would say my style is very diverse. I love music from soft, dreamy edm to fiery, bass-driven pop. I also listen to a lot of hyper-pop, house and I love concept music. For example a song that takes a style and makes that the whole song. E.g., medieval, futuristic, fantasy, beachy etc. My debut production and songwriting release 'Everlast' is a drum and bass EDM song with a dystopian concept!

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: I would love to work with Unlike Pluto because I love the fact that he is self taught and produces such high quality music and vocals from his home as his main career. It is extremely admirable to me and I think that takes extreme talent and effort to achieve, not anyone can just do it.

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: My one toplining tip is to listen to a range of songs in a similar style to the select song. This provides an idea of stylistic vocals and then follow along with the beats, creating a fair mix of melodic and rhythmic vocals. (And chuck a few harmonies and adlibs in there :D)

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: I have not been doing this long, however I work on EDM, Pop, House, Hyperpop music because that is what I love! I am a strong believer that with any creative endeavor, you need to love it, or else you will struggle to be passionate and create masterpieces.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring addictive melodies to a song. I cannot stand seeing a songs potential wasted by poor toplines. I will work until the client is satisfied and I love writing super addictive melodies, riffs and hooks that perfectly convey the feel and mood that a client is trying to convey through a song.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I typically listen to a beat or song multiple times, creating different toplines which I then put into temporary lyrics and record. I usually add some harmonies and background vocals to spice it up and give the buyer the best product possible. I have myself to provide male vocals and I have a female vocalist to provide female vocals for my toplines. However, if I can reach them in my range I will sing them. If a client requests my demo, I will sing the vocals an octave lower in the demo to convey the topline, then the client can raise the octave in their own recordings.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My recording setup is a RodeNT1 with an AL-1 interface, recording into Ableton Standard with Antares, editing vocals in Ableton and tuning vocals with Melodyne. For toplining, I write melodies to beats and then record them with myself or a female vocalist in my recording setup.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I am new into music production and production professionals like Lost Sky, Loving Caliber and Unlike Pluto inspire me because I love their style of music and ability to create such magical songs.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Toplining services for EDM/ Pop songs of all styles is my most common form of work (and I love it!), however I also provide bass vocals and backing vocals for demos and songs.
