* Productions that require vocals will need to be recorded by the vocalist at either their own home or a studio, and the audio stem sent over to add into the mix. The rest of the production will be done remotely. This also applies to any sections of a production that musicians would like to specifically record themselves.

Interview with Tim Nova (31 Twelve Music)

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I had a request from someone who wanted a metal/rock style track producing (think Ozzy mixed with Rise Against) but he wanted lots of sound effects thrown in like sirens, gunfire, lightning etc. I thought it was a bit out of my depth and I'd not produced anything like it before, but we worked together on it and the finished song was better than I'd imagined it could be.. plus he absolutely loved the track and told me it'd taken him 30 years to find someone who could actually get the sound he wanted which felt like a great achievement!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently working on a Country track for an artist I've been involved with for a while, which will follow with an EP, plus 2 upcoming EP's for female solo artist.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Currently digital but would love to work with analogue gear someday!

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: To get the 'sound in your head' out!

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Being creative and every song is different! I also love taking something from its bare bones to a fully finished track that an artist can be proud of to release to their fans!

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: I would ask what they expect 'sound' wise, turnaround time and any song references that they like the style of.

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Ask questions and don't be afraid to elaborate on exactly what you want! This allows me to visualise what you're after and also allows me to be honest as to whether I'm the right person for your project. A good working relationship is vital and I would only start a job if I think I could complete it to the best of my ability.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: It would have to be an acoustic guitar, audio interface, laptop, microphone and midi controller.. and a power supply!

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: I've been an artist and band member for years, and in 2020 I started getting more involved in production. Over the last few years I've grown my skills and immersed myself in production & mixing and started working with other artists helping them get their songs produced.

  19. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  20. A: I would absolutely love to work with Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic! He's one of those producers that I think I could learn a lot from especially when it comes to the melodic and songwriting elements of song production.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Don't overdo it! It's very easy to get carried away and start 'over producing' songs and adding too many elements. They key I've found is that more isn't always better and to make sure each musical section serves a purpose. This also makes things easier when it comes to the mixing process!

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: Usually pop/indie/rock/country/singer-somgwriter genres but always open to new styles and new challenges!

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: I listen to what the artist wants! This may sound simple but being an artist myself, I understand the we have a sound in our heads we want to get out into the world. I will always be honest with what I think will work in a production and make sure the quality is as high as possible.

  27. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  28. A: New ideas, high quality recordings and make sure the elements I add, compliment the song.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: For song production I typically send an artist a production questionnaire outlining all of their requirements along with a demo of the song plus any references. Once we've come to an agreement on the style of production they will send over a guide vocal and I will start working on the track. Once the basis of the track is recorded this will be sent to the artist for approval and any changes/tweaks can be made. The artist can then record their vocals and send back to be mixed into the track. The track is then mixed and any final tweaks made. The song is then sent over to the artist along with an instrumental mix. The whole process is very collaborative and I like to make it as easy as possible as well as enjoyable and always want the artists vision to be brought to life!

  31. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  32. A: I have a home studio setup using Logic Pro X with equipment from the likes of Aston, Shure, Yamaha, Universal Audio, SSL.

  33. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  34. A: Generally inspired by modern pop/rock/indie & guitar music as well as acoustic/country & singer-songwriter style songs. (Think the likes of OneRepublic, James Bay, Vance Joy, City & Colour, Luke Combs, Kodaline, Snow Patrol etc)

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: Mostly full song production and remote mixing/mastering
