Interview with Giovanni Whelan

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm proud of my remix of 'Duck". Completed within a day, it demonstrates my ability to work efficiently while producing a mix that really resonates.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm always creating new music, and mixing clients music.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both! I love the sonic character of analog gear, but the flexibility of digital is essential, so I tend to lean digital.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: The mix will be the absolute best it can be.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I love the collaborative aspect. Taking an artist's musical vision and helping them bring it to full fruition. It's extremely satisfying hearing a finished song and knowing I played a role in making it the best it can be.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Common questions include: "How much do you charge?" Pricing is listed on my profile. "How long will it take?". 2-3 days, typically. "Can you make it sound like this popular song?" Yes! My goal is to help the artist achieve their vision for the song, and that includes reference tracks.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That it's just about "making it sound good". A great mix enhances and communicates the artist's emotional intentions and creates an immersive listening experience.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: I like to ask: - Can you share some reference tracks that represent the sonic direction you envision? - What emotions do you want your music to convey? - Are there any specific elements of the mix you'd like to highlight?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Look for an engineer who takes the time to listen to your goals and whose aesthetic sensibilities align with yours. Open communication is crucial to achieve the final mix that truly represents your work.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: I only need two! - My laptop, and headphones.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: My passion for audio began as a hobby and has evolved into a seven-year journey of developing my skills. I recently received a Diploma in Professional Recording Arts from LaSalle College, and now work as a mixing engineer alongside my own artist project.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: I'd describe my style as clean, punchy, and loud. I aim for mixes that are sonically rich and balanced, while maintaining the energy and character the artist intended.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Skrillex. His stuff is next level.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Less is often more. Setting levels, Subtle EQ changes, tasteful compression, and careful placement within the stereo field can go a long way in making a mix sound professional and impactful.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: While I'm open to various genres, I specialize in EDM. I have a particular passion for the energy and creative potential within the genre.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: I'd say my biggest strength is my ability to create a focused mix. I can layer and manipulate sounds in a way that makes them both cohesive and clearly defined, allowing each instrument and vocal element its own place within the musical landscape.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I bridge the gap between the artist's vision and the final product. I combine my technical expertise in mixing with a discerning ear and a touch of creative flair. This allows me to work alongside the artist, refining their music and translating it into an impactful listening experience.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I begin by listening to the whole song first and understanding the artist's vision, and feel they want their song to convey. I prioritize client feedback throughout the mixing process, working collaboratively to achieve a final product that perfectly reflects their artistic vision.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I use Ableton and Bitwig as my main DAW's but I also own Pro Tools, and Logic. I have both monitors and headphones, an audio interface, and a large collection of industry standard VST's.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I'm constantly inspired by Skrillex and Noisia for their insanely clean mixes, KOAN Sound for their creativity, and producers like Rick Rubin for their skill in bringing out the unique essence of an artist.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: My bread and butter is taking a song and transforming it into a polished, cohesive mix that stays true to the artist's vision. This includes balancing levels, EQ, compression, reverb, delay, creating dynamic contrasts, and ensuring the overall mix translates well across different listening environments.
