Mix Engineer -Inde/Country/CCM

Aidan Hodges on SoundBetter

I'm known as the engineer that cares immensely about people, let's create some magic together. I want to take that sound in your head and articulate it. Excellent communication, guaranteed results. Let's connect and work together!

I've been freelancing as a mixer/engineer/musician in Knoxville for several years and have worked with folks like Will Carter, Ian Peters, Middlebrook Music, Blake Wrinn, HGTV, Taber Gable, and others! I am the in-house engineer at a few studios around town and I love what I do. I'm the best at worship, singer-songwriter, inde-pop, country, and jazz. Experienced musician, recording engineer, live sound engineer.

Contact me and let's talk about your project!

Interview with Aidan Hodges

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Christmas in Kentucky was one of the first tunes we cut exclusively in the new studio space! A good friend of mine, Stephen, is the artist. I think we captured something special in those few days. I mixed, engineered, and played percussion on the track.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: My mix room is tuned, treated, and set up for overdubs and mixing. I use Focusrite interfaces here since I don't do much final tracking at this location. I mix on Dynaudio BM6a Nearfields, some truly lovely speakers. I have an extensive collection of plugins and love seeing how much I can maximize a small-medium sized room. At TenMondays, the studio where I do track most projects. We have a control room and a live room isolated from each other, conversion with Universal Audio, outboard from Universal Audio/Warm Audio/and Golden Age, a great mic collection, and some incredible people in and out of there making records. I'm blessed to be surrounded by great people who love what they do.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: A single..... a single of my own!

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: Blake Wrinn is one of the best guitar players I have ever worked with. His mind as a producer is incredible, and he is just a great dude!

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: If I owned Blackbird Studios in Nashville, I'd say analog all day long haha. Digital really makes more sense for what I do. It's faster, cheaper, I can travel with it, and it won't break on me. I do love the few pieces of analog gear I have though!!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The ah-ha moments. The moments when the drummer hits the snare and the whole room stops, or the reverb tone gets locked in, or that bridge lyric finally comes to someone's head... moments where you think, "how is it real life that I even get to do this?"

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: M Audio Sputnik, My Franklin Drum Company Snare drum, Beyerdynamic DT770Pro, Warm Audio WA273EQ, my SSD.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: A mix that invites the listener in to be a part of the music.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: Lizzy McAlpine. Her prowess as an artist, vocalist, and songwriter is incredible.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Get it right at the source, it can't be said enough!!

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: Intuition. I am great at seeing where a mix or song should go and taking it there. I am great at articulating what the artist is hearing, many times before they even tell me about it. I care about making music.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Aaron Sterling, Serban Ghenea, Jack Antonoff, Alex Lacamoire, Oscar Gamboa, Marc Scibilia, Taylor Swift, Chris Greeley, Phillip Etherington

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: I do a lot of recording engineering, specifically with drums. I have an immense passion for chasing sounds and trying new things. I also of course do lots of mixing (both live and in studio) and editing for folks.
