Interview with Julia Mesuk
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Everyone thinks AI can do mixing and mastering, or that producers/musicians can mix their music themselves. First of all, AI is trained with the most popular songs, not what YOU want the song to sound like. It might sound good, but it’s not gonna sound great. Second of all, musicians and producers have a subconscious bias; it helps to have a second ear.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: If you want to succeed, follow the pros. If you want to stand out, defy the boundaries.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I mixed a Tiny Desk concert for Diana Flwrs, which had a very limited deadline. During this limited deadline, I was supposed to visit my family out of state for Christmas. So I hauled my whole studio setup out of state and mixed it there. Needless to say, I’m proud of how it turned out.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I love the sound of analog. There seems to be a certain warmth that comes with analog gear that I’ve yet to hear digital plugins 100% replicate.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask clients what artists and songs inspire them. And I try to match the sound of the songs and artists with their mix.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Don’t go for the cheapest, and don’t go for the most popular.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started with music technology class in high school in 2019, since it combined two of my favorite things, music and computers. Taking that class inspired me to pursue it further in college, majoring in Audio Engineering.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to mix for Journey, since I love that band and their latest album was not well mixed. They need a good ear in there.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually work on backgrounds and rhythm sections (drums and bass) first before “filling in the gaps” with the other instruments.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love the music of Jan Hammer, and the soundtrack of Miami Vice.
