My main area of focus is mixing, in which I enjoy creating a balance between elements in a mix and managing space so that each element plays its role. Mixing to me is about synergising a song and creating/ enhancing its tonality and mood from a recording (or any material source). With an audiophile mindset, I try to create mixes which display elements clearly, whilst creating an immersive listening experience.

Mastering is the final stage in the production process. It is where a production is polished and prepared for release. Precise and fine control of dynamics and frequency range can be used to help a song translate across different mediums, whilst enhancing and bringing together the mood and energy.

I also write and produce music for myself which I release under the name Lilypad Project, which is where I get most of my experience working with electronic music. All of my productions under this name are from start to finish all my work.

Dylan has brought a perfect dynamic to every song they've worked on with me. Not only do they have a great knowledge of audio, but they also have an amazing creativity and passion for everything they do. When hiring an engineer you want someone who pushes boundaries of your own writings, Dylan does that. In today's climate it's so far and few between to find someone who really, really cares about what they're creating. It's cliché and a bit strange to say, but Dylan really adds a spiritual feel to everything they make, no other music provokes that feeling like Dylan's does.

Interview with Dylan Flint

Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I am a student sound engineer and producer who has been producing for several years. I have most recently been learning advanced production that brings my skillset to a professional level, especially in the realms of mixing and mastering.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't think too hard about what you're doing. The best productions are done without overanalysing.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring an audiophile perspective and attention to detail in how I balance a mix/ master.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is mainly in the box using Ableton Live, since I work on a limited budget. I have a small recording setup as well for production, which I am investing in. Most importantly for me, I use Sennheiser HD560s for the bulk of my mixing, which are an audiophile headphone with a completely neutral frequency response and good technical performance so that I can get a full and detailed picture of my mixes, but I always check my mixes on commercial products as well.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My main area of focus is mixing and mastering, though I produce as well for clients I know well.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital is the basis of modern music production. It is much cheaper and ten fold easier to work with. Whilst analogue gear is great for adding extra flavour to productions, no song needs analogue to sound good. Decent software and a sharp ear and skillset is what makes productions good in this day and age.
