Interview with Cole Nesson

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Mix of both, you can get the benefits from each step.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: What references do you have for this project?

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Spend some time chatting back and forth to make sure you're comfortable and it's going to be a good fit.

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: Scarlett 2i2, Shure SM7B, Cloudlifter, Computer With Pro Tools, and My Track Ball. All you need.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: Always this, been in music for over a decade now.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Indie.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: Stevie Wonder, just an absolute legend.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Go with your gut.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Help on a ton of country records, but tend to produce more indie and singer-songwriter things.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Melody writing.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: I like to think my ear is my biggest strength. Finding compelling melodies and hooks and grooves in a production.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: Like to stay in touch with the client as much as possible. Usually get together a rough track and scratch vocal, then I like to produce everything out and track the final vocal. Then I'll spend some time editing, comping, and tuning and making sure the production is there. Then mixing and mastering!!

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: Pretty light setup for the home space. Rocking a pair of Kali Audio LP6's with some solid room correction software on them. Have about 12 acoustic panels placed around my room and on the ceiling to give me a pretty flat frequency response.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: Always been a huge fan of Julian Bunetta!

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: Lots of production and mixing work. Also do a decent amount of editing, tuning, things like that.
