Mixing Engineer/Producer with 20+ years experience in wide range of genres

The driving force in my life is the ability and privilege of taking someone's artistic vision and being able to elevate it to and faithfully mold it into its final form. I am a mixing engineer and producer with experience across a wide swath of genres. From Pop to Metal, Indie to Country, Celtic to Hip-Hop. Being raised in the heart of Cajun/Creole country, I am able to take influences and inspiration from any style and seamlessly blur the lines of genre to create something completely unique and original. This time working with not only mainstream styles, but also cultural/world music gives me real world experience in the treatments necessary for eclectic instrumentation while also constantly striving to stay on top of current and modern production and engineering techniques. I am able to faithfully work in any genre but also utilize this experience in my main creative focus which is based more in an aggressive rock format. My use and knowledge of pop production also lends to a more marketable finished product despite genre. I am looking forward to working with you and helping you materialize your artistic vision.

Interview with Jonathan Romein

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: I import the project into whatever DAW I am using. I'll organize all tracks into a template to maximize my workflow efficiency. Once I have everything organized, I will clean up any audio files, removing unnecessary silence, assessing any repair that made to be done. Next I start applying subtractive/corrective eq to remove any problem frequencies and to create space and pockets for each instrument to fit into and improve clarity. After that I'll begin adding compression for dynamic control and also tonal enhancement. Once compression is applied I add coloring eq. All the while I'm routing tracks to busses for FX, grouping, etc. Once all of this is set I will start applying automation where necessary.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: I am able to work in multiple set-ups. I have a pretty basic setup at home that I use mainly for song crafting and smaller mixing jobs that I run through Logic Pro. I also have access to fully treated mixing room with racks of outboard hardware along with a vast software library of plug-ins. In this set-up I run Pro Tools.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: I draw inspiration from engineers and producers from all walks and levels. From the producers working with multi-million dollar budgets to the producers using the most basic of equipment and using it in very creative ways to create something completely unique and special. The explosion of access to the ability to self produce has been a double edged sword. On one hand, the amount of content available can be a bog to sift through and it makes it difficult for the truly special artist to be seen. Then on the other hand, this easily accessible path to creating has truly opened up the bounds of what was possible. I love when new, off-the-wall techniques that would be looked at by more "seasoned" engineers with disdain and disgust are created out of necessity and then they become industry standards.

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: Typically I am brought on early in the songwriting phase of a project to assist with maintaining a focus/workflow and providing an outside opinion which can be critical during this phase. During the mixing phase, I consult with the artist to get a deep understanding of how they envision the project sonically which allows me to go into the mix with a clear path of where I am trying to go and the road I need to get there.
