Interview with April Royal
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I’m not currently working on a client project, as I’m focusing on my Audio Production studies at Los Angeles Film School and continuing to build my skills through personal music projects. I’m growing Interyx Studios and looking forward to working with artists who want to bring their musical ideas to life through mixing, mastering, and vocal tuning.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment, I’m primarily focused on my Audio Production studies at Los Angeles Film School and continuing to develop my skills as an engineer. I’m also building Interyx Studios and working on my own music projects, using each experience as an opportunity to improve my mixing, mastering, and vocal production techniques. I’m looking forward to taking on more client projects and continuing to grow professionally.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I’m still building my professional network on SoundBetter, so I haven’t found anyone I can personally recommend just yet. I believe in recommending professionals whose work I’ve experienced and trust. As I continue connecting with other engineers, producers, and musicians, I hope to build relationships with talented people I can confidently recommend to my clients.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I prefer digital because it gives me flexibility, precision, and more creative control when mixing and mastering. Working in Logic Pro and Pro Tools allows me to experiment with EQ, compression, vocal tuning, and effects to shape a sound that fits each artist’s vision. I also appreciate analog equipment’s warmth and character, so I’m open to combining both approaches when it benefits the music. For me, the most important thing is achieving the best sound for the song.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to every client is to listen to their vision, communicate honestly, and give every project my full attention. At Interyx Studios, I’m committed to continually improving my craft, paying attention to the details, and helping artists achieve a sound they can be proud of. Your music, your vision, and your unique style matter to me.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I enjoy most about my work is being able to bring music to life and hear the difference that mixing, mastering, and vocal tuning can make. I love experimenting with sounds, learning new techniques, and finding ways to help a song stand out while keeping the artist’s vision intact. Building Interyx Studios gives me the opportunity to grow as an engineer while doing something I’m genuinely passionate about: music.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: As I continue building Interyx Studios, I’m preparing to answer common questions about my services, pricing, turnaround times, and revisions. I want every client to feel comfortable asking questions and understanding the process before starting a project. My goal is to communicate clearly, set realistic expectations, and make sure each artist feels confident trusting me with their music.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice is to find an engineer who listens to your vision, communicates clearly, and cares about bringing out the best in your music. Be clear about the sound you’re going for, share reference tracks, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. A great mix should enhance your unique style, not change who you are as an artist. At Interyx Studios, my goal is to help you bring your vision to life while continuing to grow together through the creative process.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I were stranded on a desert island and could only take five pieces of gear, I’d take my Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 audio interface, Lewitt LCT 240 PRO microphone, Audio-Technica headphones, my laptop with Logic Pro and Pro Tools, and a portable power source. These would allow me to record vocals, mix music, experiment with vocal effects, and keep creating wherever I am. Music is my passion, so I’d find a way to keep making it even on a desert island!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My journey into audio engineering started with my passion for music and wanting to learn how to create a better sound for my own projects. I’m currently studying Audio Production at Los Angeles Film School while building my business, Interyx Studios. I specialize in mixing, mastering, and vocal tuning, and I’m continually developing my skills through hands-on practice and personal projects. My goal is to grow as an audio professional, work with more artists, and help bring their musical visions to life.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is creative, detail-oriented, and focused on bringing vocals to life. I enjoy experimenting with vocal effects, EQ, compression, and tuning to create a sound that stands out while staying true to the artist’s vision. I’m especially drawn to hip-hop, melodic rap, and energetic vocal performances, but I’m always open to exploring different genres and sounds through Interyx Studios.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love the opportunity to work with Eminem because of his incredible lyricism, technical skill, and unique vocal delivery. I admire how he uses his voice, flow, and emotion to bring his music to life. Working with an artist like him would be an amazing opportunity to learn, challenge myself as a mixing and mastering engineer, and help bring out every detail in a powerful vocal performance.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: 🎧 Mix with your ears, not just your eyes! One of my biggest tips is to check your mix at a low volume. This helps you hear whether the vocals are balanced with the beat without being distracted by loudness. If the vocals still stand out clearly and the song feels balanced at a low volume, you’re on the right track!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I primarily work with hip-hop and rap, including trap and melodic rap. I’m also interested in working with R&B, pop, rock, and country. I enjoy experimenting with different vocal styles and sounds, and my goal is to help each artist achieve a polished mix that fits their genre and creative vision through Interyx Studios.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is working with vocals and shaping their sound through mixing and vocal tuning. I enjoy experimenting with EQ, compression, and effects to improve clarity, balance, and character. I’m constantly learning and refining my techniques so I can help artists bring out the best in their music while preserving their unique style.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring creativity, attention to detail, and a passion for helping artists bring their musical vision to life. Through mixing, mastering, and vocal tuning, I focus on enhancing vocal clarity, creating balanced mixes, and adding effects that complement each artist’s unique style. I’m always learning, experimenting, and working to help every song sound its best while staying true to the artist’s vision.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process starts with understanding the artist’s vision, musical style, and goals for the track. I review the audio files, organize the session, and work on balancing levels, EQ, compression, vocal tuning, and effects to create a cohesive sound. I then review the mix, make adjustments based on feedback, and focus on delivering a polished final result that reflects the artist’s creative vision. Communication and attention to detail are important throughout the process.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup is built around a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 audio interface, PreSonus Eris E5 studio monitors, and a Lewitt LCT 240 PRO condenser microphone, along with Audio-Technica headphones. I work primarily in Logic Pro and Pro Tools for recording, mixing, mastering, and vocal tuning. My setup allows me to work on vocals, experiment with effects, and develop my skills while creating polished mixes for artists through Interyx Studios.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I primarily focus on audio mixing, mastering, and vocal tuning for music projects. I work on balancing vocals, enhancing clarity, applying EQ and compression, and using effects to help tracks sound polished and cohesive. My goal is to help artists bring their creative vision to life while continuing to grow my skills and deliver quality results through Interyx Studios
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One of the biggest misconceptions about mixing and mastering is that it’s just about making a song louder. It’s really about creating balance, clarity, and depth while making sure the vocals and instruments work together. Every adjustment matters, from EQ and compression to vocal tuning and effects. My goal at Interyx Studios is to help artists bring out the best in their music while keeping their unique sound and creative vision intact.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: When working with a new client, I will ask about their vision for the project, the genre, and the sound they’re trying to achieve. I also ask if they have reference tracks, what services they need, and whether they have a deadline. I want to understand their expectations, communicate clearly, and make sure we’re on the same page before I begin working on their music. My goal at Interyx Studios is to make the process smooth, collaborative, and focused on bringing their vision to life.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by artists like Joyner Lucas, Tech N9ne, Juice WRLD, Eminem, and Post Malone. I admire their lyrical creativity, unique flows, emotional delivery, and willingness to experiment with different sounds. Their music motivates me to keep improving my mixing and mastering skills, experiment with vocal effects, and help artists develop their own unique sound through Interyx Studios.
