Endorse Fehrplay │Jonas von der Fehr2 Reviews
check_circleVerifiedSuper fast mastering, track sounds great, professional experience.
check_circleVerifiedAs an experienced producer, Jonas knows exactly what your track needs, and with this keen ear, he can clearly and precisely advise on what can be improved even before the final work. I'm very satisfied and highly recommend working with him, his knowledge is priceless and can only help you understand music production more and more in depth what might be very helpful in the future.
Interview with Fehrplay │Jonas von der Fehr
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One of the projects I’m most proud of is my official remix for Røyksopp - Sordid affair. It was an honour to reimagine music from such an iconic act whose sound has influenced so many producers, including myself.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently finishing a few mastering projects for up-and-coming techno and house producers, as well as wrapping up some new music under my Fehrplay project. Always something exciting happening in the studio.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: There are many talented people on SoundBetter, and I’m always open to connecting and recommending others when it fits the project. Collaboration makes music stronger.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. I use a hybrid workflow. Digital for precision and recall, analog for warmth and character. It’s about choosing the right tool for the emotion of the track. For club music, that combination gives me the best of both worlds.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to treat every project with the same care and attention I give my own releases. I’ll always communicate clearly, deliver on time, and make sure you’re 100% happy with the final result.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Helping artists hear their music at its absolute best. There’s nothing more satisfying than when a client says they are happy wiht the result, or being sent a video of the song doing damage at a club or festival. I also love the balance between technical focus and creativity. Every track is a new puzzle to solve.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How I get that warmth and dynamic sound as well as loudness. The answer is attention to balance and frequency control, especially in the low end, combined with experience from years of touring and producing tracks that work on big systems. It’s about making every sound earn its space.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That mixing and mastering are purely technical processes. In reality, they’re creative acts, about understanding emotion, space, and how to guide a listener through sound.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask what they want the listener to feel. That helps me shape the mix and master to support their emotional intent, not just hit a loudness target.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who truly understands your genre and your goals. Communication and shared vision are as important as technical skill. Don’t just hire an engineer, hire someone who can help your music connect.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My MacBook, my trusted earplus Shure KSE-1500, the Unfairchild MkII for the ultimate vibe, the Bricasti reverb, for the all purpose creamy sound and a good coffee machine, because creativity needs caffeine.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been producing and touring for over a decade as Fehrplay, releasing music on labels like Anjunabeats and Mau5trap, and playing clubs and festivals around the world. Over time, I developed a deep passion for mixing and mastering, and helping others achieve the same level of sound quality I’ve chased in my own records.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Clean, powerful, and emotional. My mixes aim to hit hard in the club but still breathe and tell a story. I focus on keeping dynamics alive while making every element feel intentional and impactful.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to collaborate with artists like RÜFÜS DU SOL or Stephan Bodzin. They are both artists who create immersive, emotional worlds within electronic music. Their attention to sound and storytelling really resonates with me.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always start with the core emotion of the track. If the kick and main musical element don’t already vibe together, no amount of processing will fix it later. Simplicity and intent are more powerful than endless tweaking.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Primarily electronic music. House, melodic techno, progressive, and club-focused styles. I also enjoy crossover projects that blend cinematic or ambient elements with electronic production.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Balancing emotion and precision. I can zoom in on tiny details without losing sight of the bigger picture, how the track makes people move and feel.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Clarity, depth, and energy. I help artists make their music sound big, alive, and emotionally engaging while preserving their unique identity.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Every project starts with a conversation about the artist’s creative vision. Once I have the stems, I do an initial balance and tonal shaping, then refine the mix across multiple listening refernces. For mastering, I focus on clarity, dynamics, and loudness that fits the genre, without losing the energy or emotion of the track. I always deliver revisions until the client is 100% happy.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio, Tenet Studio, is a hybrid setup designed around both precision and vibe. I work mainly in the box with high-end converters and analog monitoring, but I also use select analog processors for colour and depth. The room is fully acoustically treated, tuned for low-end accuracy, and built to make critical mix decisions translate everywhere.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’ve always been inspired by producers and engineers who bring both musicality and sound design to the table. Artists like Frank Wiedemann, Hannes Bieger, Joris Voorn, Eric Prydz, and Maceo Plex. Their ability to merge technical precision with deep emotion and original arrangements is what drives me in the studio.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I specialize in mixing and mastering for electronic and club music, everything from melodic house and techno to more progressive, more dynamic and atmospheric productions. My focus is always on translating the artist’s vision into a mix that feels powerful, clear, and emotionally engaging on the dancefloor and beyond.
