Interview with Josyy B
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I recorded a demo and was in charge of lead, background, and ad lib vocals. It was my first time doing any of it. I was proud because the song was very strict, but I still made it my own and sound very pretty.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m working on my first album that will tell my story. Also, I’m working on an album about the ups and downs of love.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I do not.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I miss analog, but I like that digital can be accessed almost anywhere.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will do my best to fulfill your wishes for the song, add my heart and soul to the track, and elevate it.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love that I get to bring emotion to my job.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What type of equipment I have? What is my style? What is my budget? What have I worked on?
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Being a singer is easy. I am literally the instrument and inhave to make my voice do all sorts of things while maintaining proper vocal health.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask if lyrics are provided, how much freedom I have vocally, and if/when there’s a deadline.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: You should FEEL a connection to a potential partner. Their sound should spark something within you.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Microphone, laptop (if there’s connection out there), speaker, xlr cable, audio interface.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I am on path to be a music educator. I have been singing my whole life and producing for a year.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Emotional, chill, moving, quirky at times, sensual
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Giveon because of his sound and music production. He uses lots of instruments and nature sounds like rain and that is something I am into.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Play around! Sometimes we think we want a certain ound, but then you might hear a random sound you like and it works out even better.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on Pop, R&B/soul, Jazz, and spoken word.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Being able to spice up a track. From classical to jazz to pop, I bring my own flair and add more to the song in a way that is ME, but not overwhelming or compromising the integrity of it.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I am the soul of each song. Whatever style the song is, I am the heartbeat of it. Maybe it needs breathiness, or belting, or a little acting, I deliver.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a Sennheiser e835 mic and stand, pop filter, PreSonus audio interface, headphones, and a Novation Launchkey midi keyboard.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Giveon, Jhené Aiko, DVSN, Ariana Grande inspire my production.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I provide vocals. I am still newer to production, so that isn’t something I offer yet.
