Interview with Rafael Vieira
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The short thriller film Onlooker. I handled all audio: music, sound design, editing, and mix. It worked as a strong proof of concept and opened new professional connections.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Original music for short films with two Swedish directors. Major advertising campaigns in Brazil and internationally. Developing my own audio production brand.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I prefer to recommend based on the specific project and needs.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, with a touch of analog. Speed, flexibility, and recall matter. Emotion comes from human choices, not tools.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Clear communication. True partnership focused on the project’s success. Reliable delivery. Music that serves the story.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Helping a project feel complete. When sound and picture lock emotionally.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: “Can you work fast?” Yes, when communication is clear.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That there is only one right musical answer. Music can take a scene in many directions. Collaboration defines the final result.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is the story? What is the overall message and vision? Where will this be shown? What should the audience feel at the end?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who asks about story and vision, not just style. Clear communication matters more than gear.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop. Headphones. Audio interface. One MIDI controller. One orchestral library.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: About 20 years in audio. First 10 years as a live musician and studio professional. Then I shifted to music production and audio post for advertising. Now focused on film, series, and games.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Cinematic. Emotionally impactful. Focused on mood and storytelling.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Christopher Nolan. Because his films constantly challenge the audience and treat sound and music as part of the narrative.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: A good musical idea works in any style or instrumentation.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Cinematic, hybrid orchestral, electronic, tension-driven music. I also work comfortably with minimal piano and atmospheric styles.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Seeing the bigger picture. Making music serve the project, not ego.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Story focus. Clear emotional direction. Production and mixes that translate the vision of the story.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by understanding story and intention. Then references, mood, and temp discussion. I sketch early and share fast. Feedback, refine, deliver clean stems and mixes.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Mac-based studio centered around Pro Tools. Large orchestral and hybrid templates. Professional virtual instruments and processing tools used in film and advertising. Built for speed, consistency, and full recall across complex projects.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Danny Elfman, Ludwig Göransson, and Alan Silvestri. I’m drawn to strong themes, bold orchestration, and epic cinematic storytelling.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Original music for films, series, ads, games, and branded content. I also handle sound design and full audio post when needed.
