Rodolfo is a kind, talented and hard-working audio engineer that has lots of knowledge about music, theory, recording, mixing and mastering. It was a positive surprise to understand more about his music views and to work along him in our forthcoming EP. Besides his deep caring for our project, we would like to point his fast-paced approach to our mix, delivering a high quality result in just a few days.

Rodolfo did an excellent job mixing and mastering the songs from my EP "Quando Você Quiser Ouvir". He was extremely attentive at all times and very collaborative throughout the process.
Right at the beginning of the work, I realized that he could easily understand and interpret the places I wanted to go with my songs, much better than how I tried to describe it. With his very sharp perception and sensibilities we achieved an awesome result.

Interview with Rodolfo Ribeiro

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: Helping artists discover new dimensions in their music while keeping their authentic voice at the heart of everything. There's something magical about that moment when a mix suddenly clicks and the song reveals its full emotional potential. Being part of an artist's creative journey and helping them realize their vision is incredibly fulfilling.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: That mixing is just technical balancing. In reality, modern mixing - especially in indie music - is often creative arrangement and sonic storytelling. Sometimes I'm adding the final 10% polish, other times I'm shaping 60% of the song's character. It's about serving the song's emotional narrative, not just making everything sound "professional

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: "What do you want this song to make people feel?" is always my starting point. I also ask about their reference tracks, not for copying, but to understand their aesthetic preferences. I want to know about their recording process and any specific elements they're excited about or concerned about. Most importantly, I ask about their goals for the project and timeline expectations

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Find someone who's genuinely curious about what your song means to you, not just how many tracks you have or what sample rate you recorded at. The right mixer will want to know what you're trying to make people feel when they hear your music. Also, look for someone who treats this as a creative partnership - your vision should always be the driving force, but you want someone who can bring fresh ideas and perspective to help you get there.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: 1 - My laptop with my carefully curated plugin collection 2 - Quality studio monitors for accurate reference 3 - Audio interface for pristine signal path 4 - My best pair of headphones for detailed work 5 - A properly treated room environment - because without accurate acoustics, none of the other gear matters The goal is maintaining the ability to create those dynamic, emotionally intelligent mixes regardless of location, but it all starts with being able to trust what you're hearing.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I started as a choir singer, then moved to guitar and songwriting in bands. This musical foundation taught me about melody, harmony, and emotional storytelling. As I began producing my own music, I discovered how profoundly mixing could transform a song's impact. I've been focused on mixing professionally for two years, bringing both technical expertise and an artist's perspective to every project.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: I'm all about serving the song's emotional story first. Coming from a background as a songwriter and performer myself, I hear music as these emotional journeys that need to breathe and build in just the right places. My approach is really melody-driven - I want every mix decision to support what's at the heart of the song. I love crafting those moments where you go from something intimate and close to suddenly feeling this huge, expansive sound that gives you chills. It's not just about making things sound polished - it's about making people feel something when they listen.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: I'd love to work with Phoebe Bridgers or someone in that indie sphere who writes with incredible emotional depth. Her music embodies that perfect balance of intimate vulnerability and cinematic scope that I grew up listening to. Collaborating with an artist who gets how a whispered vocal can hit just as hard as a soaring chorus - that's the kind of creative partnership that would push me to bring my absolute best to every session.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Before you start mixing, take time to really listen to the song's emotional journey. Map out where the song needs to build and where it needs space. The best mixes aren't just technically balanced - they're emotionally intelligent. Every EQ cut, every reverb tail, every compression setting should serve the song's emotional arc

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: My strongest skill is creating dynamic contrast that serves the song's emotional narrative. I excel at building those crucial moments where a stripped-back verse suddenly blooms into a powerful chorus, or knowing exactly when to pull back and let the song breathe. This isn't just technical - it's about understanding the emotional architecture of great songs.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: I bring the perspective of both an artist and an engineer. As a songwriter myself, I understand the vulnerability and passion that goes into creating music. Technically, I specialize in crafting a journey - knowing when to create space and when to build intensity. I help transform raw emotions into sonic experiences where every element serves the melody and the song's emotional core

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: Before touching any faders, I listen deeply to the rough mix to understand the artist's vision and emotional intent. I start by having the artist send their organized stems, rough mix, and 1-2 reference tracks that capture elements they're seeking. My process begins with an initial mix that aims for about 80% completion - capturing the overall vibe and emotional flow while building on the strengths already present in their rough mix. I focus on creating balance and establishing the song's sonic personality. I use Samply for efficient feedback, where artists can leave timestamped comments at specific moments in the song. This keeps our communication precise and collaborative. Once we're aligned on direction, I dive into detailed refinements - crafting automations that highlight key emotional moments and adding those special touches that make elements truly shine. I don't put arbitrary limits on revisions because my goal is getting the mix exactly where the artist envisions it. The process stays collaborative throughout, ensuring their authentic voice remains central while benefiting from my technical expertise

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I'm mainly in the box for mixing, which allows me to work efficiently with international clients and maintain perfect recall for revisions. I use hardware whenever I track, which is rarely since I primarily focus on mixing. My monitoring environment is acoustically treated and carefully calibrated to ensure what I'm hearing is accurate - this precision is essential for making the right decisions that best serve each song and guarantee great translation across all playback systems

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: I'm inspired by producers who understand the emotional architecture of songs. Artists like Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, who creates atmospheric soundscapes that serve the song's core, and producers like Nigel Godrich, who knows when to add polish and when to preserve raw authenticity. I'm drawn to professionals who blend technical expertise with deep musical intuition

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: I specialize in mixing and co-production for indie artists who want to elevate their songs through dynamic arrangements and emotional depth. Most commonly, I work with self-producing artists who need that final 10-30% of sonic shaping to bring their vision to life. My approach focuses on serving the melody while crafting those crucial dynamic contrasts - from intimate verses to soaring choruses - that make songs truly memorable.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on Indie music that being rock, pop or rap.
