Interview with Just Julian Music

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Starting my own independent music group and art company, Dank Homies, is another achievement I'm proud of. Building a community where artists can collaborate and share their creativity has been rewarding. I’m dedicated to fostering an environment that supports artistic growth and innovation. One project I’m especially proud of is my work with Swifty Blue and Anthoe the Great on beat production. This collaboration allowed me to dive deep into the creative process, experimenting with different sounds and samples to craft tracks that really resonated with their styles. My role involved not just beat making but also working on sample selection and arrangement, ensuring everything flowed seamlessly. Additionally, my sample work with Universal Japan and Australia Interactive has been a highlight. Contributing to projects that showcase diverse musical influences and cultures was incredibly fulfilling. I was responsible for producing beats that aligned with the vision of each label, allowing me to explore new sounds and collaborate with talented artists. I also performed live music 43 times in one year, which was an exhilarating experience. It pushed me to connect with audiences in real-time and adapt my performances, further refining my skills as a producer and artist.

We’re exploring various themes and styles, aiming to produce tracks that resonate with their audience while reflecting their unique experiences. I handle production, mixing, and help shape their overall artistic direction. Day Boogie (Independent Long Beach Hip-Hop Artist) I’m collaborating with Day Boogie, an independent hip-hop artist from Long Beach, to create tracks that capture the vibrant energy of the area. Our focus is on blending catchy hooks with thoughtful lyrics, ensuring each song tells a story. I’m involved in beat making, vocal mixing, and crafting a distinct sound that sets them apart in the scene. Raising Janes (Growing Plants Podcast) For the Raising Janes podcast, I’m contributing to the audio production and editing. This podcast explores the world of plant care, gardening tips, and sustainability. I work to create an engaging listening experience that enhances the informative content, making it accessible and enjoyable for plant enthusiasts and beginners alike. Universal Japan (Japanese Record Label) At Universal Japan, I’m collaborating on various projects that highlight diverse Japanese artists. My role involves production, mixing, and sometimes songwriting, focusing on creating music that appeals to both local and international audiences. I aim to help create a platform where artists can thrive and their music can connect with broader audiences.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: I appreciate both analog and digital for different reasons. Analog offers warmth and character that can add a unique richness to recordings. The physical processes involved, like tape saturation or analog synthesizers, often bring depth and complexity that many find appealing. Digital, on the other hand, provides flexibility and precision. It allows for easier editing, manipulation, and the ability to work with a wide range of plugins and virtual instruments, which can significantly enhance productivity. Ultimately, I believe in using the strengths of both. Depending on the project, I might blend analog techniques with digital tools to achieve the best possible sound and vibe. This hybrid approach allows for creativity and exploration while maintaining high production quality.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: Clear Communication: I will keep an open line of communication throughout the project, ensuring that your ideas and feedback are heard and incorporated. High-Quality Production: I strive for excellence in every aspect of production, from mixing to mastering, to deliver a polished final product that you can be proud of. Creativity and Innovation: I will bring fresh ideas and a creative approach to your project, helping you explore sounds and styles that elevate your music. Respect for Your Vision: Your artistic vision is paramount. I’ll work diligently to understand and realize it, ensuring that the final track reflects your unique identity as an artist. Timely Delivery: I’ll adhere to agreed-upon timelines, keeping you updated on progress and making sure we stay on track.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: What I like most about my job is the opportunity to collaborate with artists and help them bring their visions to life. It’s incredibly rewarding to see a project evolve from an idea to a polished track. I enjoy the creative process—whether it’s crafting beats, mixing vocals, or experimenting with different sounds. Each project is unique, allowing me to continually learn and grow as a producer. Additionally, the ability to connect with different artists and hear their stories through music adds a personal touch that makes my work fulfilling. Being part of that journey and witnessing the impact of the music we create together is what I find most inspiring.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: What is your process? I start with a discussion to understand your vision, followed by planning and execution. I focus on collaboration, allowing for feedback at each stage to ensure we’re aligned. How long will it take to complete my project? Timelines vary based on the project's scope and complexity, but I always provide a rough estimate and keep you updated throughout the process. What genres do you specialize in? I primarily focus on hip hop, but I enjoy working across various genres, so I’m open to exploring different styles based on your vision. Can I make changes during the mixing/mastering process? Absolutely! I encourage open communication, and you can provide feedback at any stage to ensure the final product meets your expectations. What do you need from me to get started? I’d love to see any reference tracks, ideas, or concepts you have in mind, as well as any specific goals for the project. This helps me understand your vision better.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that music production is solely about technical skills or using fancy equipment. While having a good ear for sound and knowledge of software is important, the essence of production lies in collaboration and creativity. Many people underestimate the role of understanding an artist's vision and emotions. It's not just about mixing tracks or making beats; it's about connecting with the artist, enhancing their ideas, and helping them tell their story through music. The relationship and communication between the producer and the artist are just as crucial as the technical aspects.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What is your vision for this project?: Understanding their goals helps align our creative direction. What genre or style are you aiming for?: This clarifies the musical elements they want to incorporate. Do you have any reference tracks?: Hearing what they like can guide the production process. What specific elements do you want to focus on (e.g., beats, vocals, instrumentation)?: This helps prioritize the production aspects. What’s your timeline and budget for this project?: Knowing these parameters ensures we stay on track and within financial limits. How do you prefer to communicate throughout the process?: Establishing a communication style helps maintain a smooth workflow. Have you worked with a producer before? If so, what was your experience?: This can provide insights into their preferences and expectations. These questions help me understand the client’s needs and establish a solid foundation for our collaboration.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Know Your Vision: Have a clear idea of what you want to achieve with your project. This includes your musical style, themes, and any specific sounds you’re aiming for. Listen to Their Work: Review the producer's portfolio to see if their style aligns with your vision. Pay attention to the quality of their mixing, mastering, and overall production. Communicate Openly: Establish clear communication from the start. Share your ideas, preferences, and any references you have. The more information you provide, the better the collaboration will be. Be Open to Collaboration: Trust the producer’s expertise and be open to their suggestions. A good producer will enhance your vision while bringing their own creativity to the table. Discuss Timelines and Budget: Be upfront about your budget and deadlines. Understanding these factors will help ensure a smooth working relationship. By following these steps, you'll be better equipped to find a producer who can help bring your musical vision to life!

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Phone: Essential for communication and access to resources, music apps, and inspiration. Mic: Important for recording ideas, vocals, or anything I might want to capture in the moment. Headphones: Crucial for listening to music and mixing without disturbing the peace of the island. "Smokeout Conversations" by Dizzy Wright: This album is a personal favorite, providing inspiration and good vibes while I’m there. Studio Monitors: To ensure accurate sound reproduction, allowing me to enjoy music and work on mixes effectively.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: My career path in music production has been a journey of passion and growth. I started out experimenting with music at a young age, learning the basics of beat making and audio engineering on my own. Over the years, I honed my skills by working on various projects, collaborating with different artists, and continually seeking out opportunities to learn more about mixing and mastering. I’ve been doing this professionally for several years now, which has allowed me to develop a solid understanding of the industry and build a diverse portfolio. Throughout this time, I’ve focused on creating high-quality productions, especially in hip hop, while also exploring other genres. This experience has deepened my commitment to helping artists achieve their vision and has shaped my approach to music production.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: My style can be described as collaborative and versatile. I focus on supporting independent artists in realizing their artistic visions, emphasizing the importance of communication and adaptability throughout the process. I blend technical skills in vocal mixing and beat making with a creative approach that allows for experimentation, especially within hip hop. My goal is to create polished, impactful tracks that resonate with listeners while staying true to the artist's unique voice. Overall, my style reflects a commitment to quality and authenticity in music production.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: An independent artist who has a strong vision for their project would be an ideal collaboration. It's fulfilling to have the freedom to do what needs to be done to help realize their artistic goals. Working closely with someone passionate about their music allows for a creative exchange that can elevate the final product. I appreciate the opportunity to explore their ideas and contribute to the overall sound, whether it’s through beat making, vocal mixing, or any other aspect of production. Being part of that process and seeing their vision come to life is incredibly rewarding.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: One valuable music production tip is to always take breaks during your mixing or production sessions. Stepping away from your work for a bit allows your ears to reset, helping you return with fresh perspective. This can lead to better decision-making and clearer judgments about levels, EQ, and overall balance. Plus, it prevents ear fatigue, which can often lead to over-processing or missing subtle issues in the mix. Trust your instincts, but don’t hesitate to take that time to recharge!

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I usually work on a wide range of music, but my main focus is on hip hop. I love the genre's dynamic rhythms and storytelling elements, which allow for a lot of creativity in beat making and vocal mixing. However, I also enjoy experimenting with other styles, incorporating elements from R&B, pop, and even electronic music to bring fresh sounds to my projects. This versatility helps me adapt to different artists and their unique visions, ensuring each track feels distinct and authentic.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skills are in vocal mixing and beat making. When it comes to vocal mixing, I excel at enhancing clarity and presence while maintaining the natural emotion of the performance. I focus on EQ, compression, and effects to ensure the vocals sit perfectly in the mix, making them feel polished and impactful. In beat making, I have a knack for crafting original and engaging instrumentals. I draw from various genres to create unique rhythms and melodies that complement the artist’s vision, ensuring that each beat is both catchy and sonically rich. These strengths allow me to create cohesive and compelling tracks that resonate with listeners.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: My typical work process involves a full pushthrough mentality, ensuring that I stay focused and dedicated to the project from start to finish. I believe in maintaining momentum, so I tackle each phase of the process with determination. Efficient planning and step-taking are crucial. I start by outlining the project, breaking it down into manageable tasks—whether it’s mixing, mastering, or beat-making. This helps me stay organized and on track, allowing for smooth transitions between different stages. I also prioritize communication. Clients can reach out to me mid-session if they have questions or feedback, ensuring we’re aligned throughout the process. Additionally, I export sample versions for clients to review, which allows them to provide input and request changes within the time frame we’ve set. This collaborative approach keeps everything dynamic and ensures the final product meets their vision.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: J. Cole inspires with his storytelling and lyrical depth, reminding you of the importance of connecting with listeners through relatable themes. Scott Storch and Dr. Dre showcase mastery in beat-making, blending innovative sounds with classic hip-hop elements, pushing you to experiment and refine your production techniques. No I.D. and Jermaine Dupri highlight the significance of creating hits that resonate with both the mainstream and underground, encouraging you to balance commercial appeal with artistic integrity. Ne-Yo exemplifies exceptional songwriting and vocal arrangement, motivating you to focus on melody and emotion in your tracks. Kanye West represents innovation and risk-taking, inspiring you to challenge norms and think outside the box in your music. Finally, John Williams showcases the power of orchestration and emotion in composition, reminding you that music can transcend genres and evoke deep feelings.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: Song Mixing: Balancing various audio tracks to create a cohesive sound. This includes adjusting levels, panning, applying EQ, and adding effects to enhance the overall mix. Mastering: Finalizing the mixed tracks to ensure they sound polished and professional across all playback systems. This includes optimizing loudness, applying compression, and ensuring tonal balance. Beat Making: Creating original instrumentals or beats that serve as the foundation for songs. This involves selecting sounds, programming rhythms, and arranging musical elements.
