Interview with Jamel Copeland
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Clarity.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Communication is key for me, so I get any information about how the record should feel. After that, I set it up on my end and get to work.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Mac Mini with Apollo Twin. `
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Manny Marroquin is an amazing mixing engineer. From John Mayer's Gravity, to Kanye West's Stronger, and Travis Scott's "I Know" ; he's a legend with a lot of time in the game.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I typically mix and master tracks
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Learning how to manage money better 😂
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Why not?
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Do you have a song you want it to sound like?
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I love this question. Assuming I have power, on said desert island. And water? hopefully. Idk. Maybe water is too much. Mac (all my plugins) Apollo Twin NS-10 Mix Cubes & My phone to check my mix when I'm done :)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My first internship was at Blue Room South studios while I was still in college. It was a really demanding internship but totally worth it. I learned a lot of what I still use today. I became a professional engineer in 2022, and have been freelancing ever since. I've worked out of several studios in Atlanta, such as: Quality Control, Astro Studios, Madison Records, Doppler Studios, LVRN, & many more. I've gotten to recor multiplatinum artists such as Jeremih, 6lack, 42 Dugg, and assist for several artists, such as K Camp & Queen Naija.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: My next one! I'm always excited to hear new things, especially behind the scenes before they come out. You never know what you can say you were a part of.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Study the greats, try it for yourself, and trust yourself! You got it.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip Hop & R&B.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My confidence in my taste. I have a strong feeling for direction, and it comes across in my mixes.
