Interview with Cyphi
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: A song I made with a friend called Dreamland. My friend, a composer at university, has a voice (unlike me) and we wanted to see what we could do in combination. After many hours of discussion and work, we popped out the song that I am most proud of. 100% authentic. My music skills with his vocals turned out to be a perfect pair!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love that I have turned my hobby into a sustainable side hustle. I love producing music, and being able to get the wants in life.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Bring an example song with you, I need to hear your wants. How long do you want this track to be. How much autotune are you looking for, natural or that really over the top effect.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Lemme cook.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I discovered a program called LMMS which was pretty much a barebones FL studio maybe 10 years ago now, and thats where it all started. I then got into using FL Studio about 6 years ago and would spend whole days just tinkering with it. Over the years I have only really made tracks for myself until I was picked up by an emotes game, I was able to really hone in my skills and make a really decent living while I was at college. I only do it on the side now however.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Bou, his liquid drum and bass tracks are what got me into making it myself. I am a sucker for jump up d&b but the melodic twist of his songs are what I aim for!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: EDM, Drum and Bass, Pop, Hip Hop, Trap. The list goes on! I will never, and I repeat, never work on a dubstep track or anything associated with it.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: If I have major beatblock, I typically listen to some vocal samples and the ideas flood in. I tend to put vocals into my DAW, find the right tempo for what genre i've decided it works with and master the vocals. (Since I am primarily drum and bass orientated) I put some D&B drums with the vocals and figure out the catchy bassline. Post production mixing is very important, you don't want to blow out the speakers in your car or ruin music for yourself with a muddy texture!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: A simple ,working homeowner, with a MIDI keyboard, FL studio and an imagination.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I currently produce the tracks for emotes in games.
