Interview with Mandy Barry
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working away in the vocal booth, truly focused on session work.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Low Latency. Nothing is worse than when you're in the middle of a session and your project blows up because of latency issues that could potentially drop audio or create a system overload.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I often work on Pop and all of the facets that it brings.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I have good guts & good instincts, and that works in the studio. And I know my voice well. I'm also wildly empathetic - so when I hear a song with lyrics or a melody that grabs me, the feeling automatically takes over, and I bring that with me into the vocal booth. Being able to tell other people's stories (or my own) through music is something I cherish and that is my most natural skill. But I'm always honing my craft, and learning and applying new things each day.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I always encourage everyone to check out my demos/ showreel to see that my voice is a good fit for a project. If I am the right fit-- great! We will get that vision you are looking for. If I don't think I'm the right fit, I will recommend someone! Regardless, I want you to have the absolute best outcome for your project, even if it's not me. Communication is key + honest, clear communication is gold!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Macbook pro, audio interface, mic (warm audio<3), external hard drive, apple mouse.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been singing since I was a kid. I know everyone says that, but it's true. I came from a family of singers & performers, so it's just in my blood. I spent my time recording demos in my basement home studio. My dad (singer/songwriter) would pitch to his music publisher and would always need a female voice. I would write & record my own songs (on a shitty piano), got in front of some A&R folks early on & found my way to some label meetings. I'm the typical story- I signed a development deal at 14 and then signed to my first label for several years. My artist genre was mainly pop/rock/soul.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My personal artist style is sad girl songs, all the way. BUT- because this is session work and we're basically chameleons - I can fit many different styles like Pop (and all of Pop's nuances), EDM, R&B, Soul, Blues, Jazz. Give me an artist reference, and I'll get the vibe.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Billie Eilish & Finneas (because I wholeheartedly understand their vocal recording process),
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes, lots of talented folks on here!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: My heart says analog but practicality says digital. I grew up in my basement home studio singing demos with my dad & it was fully analog - I couldn't tell you what any of it did at the time, but I knew it was special. Each element of recording was distinctly its own. Today, digital is just so available and efficient, and I have really learned to love what digital software can really do. So while, you can't quite fully capture that specific warmth and that uniqueness that analog provides, digital has been so innovative in its own right and has come such a long way- its really made a comfortable home in today's modern music. I guess I am a digital girlie after all.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Clear communication is my gold standard. There is no such thing as over communicating with services like session work. You can expect excellent communication. I'm not happy until you, the client, are happy. I do my very best to deliver not only the best possible work but also deliver on customer service.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love that that my passion collides with my profession. Not everyone loves their job, or works in a field where you get to regularly immerse yourself in a creative medium. I feel so grateful to be able to walk into my vocal booth and smile because of the excitement to do the work. I also love the freedom and the flexibility that this gig provides, and I get to work with some fiercely talented creatives.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That artists / musicians should be content with exposure as opposed to being paid for our work. That would be like asking an electrician (or any professional) to do work for free. This is our profession- just because it incorporates creativity that is outside the scope of a typical job doesn't mean it's a side hobby. We've all had to do so much work for free over the years...just, don't be that person.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask some housekeeping questions: What is the BPM + key, and bitrate you would like me to record in? (Lyrics + Instrumental tracks are very helpful early on while discussing the project.) What is your timeline/ turn around time? Is there an artist or muse (or a vocal style) that you had in mind for this project? Is this session for a pre-written parts or would you like me to build bgvs + adlibs? Anything else you'd like me to keep in mind? The more info, the better.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring heart & perspective. I am the type of person who will pull over on the side of the road when I hear something great in a lyric, in a melody or a vocal part.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When I get into the vocal booth, I get into a zone. There's always a mood for the project. I record my takes- often hearing ideas as I go- then once I'm done recording I'll review, edit & comp from my work stations (I have 2 locations because sometimes you need that change of scenery!)
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I record in a 4x6 professionally sound treated vocal isolation booth and use a few different mics depending on the project, my favorite being the Warm Audio WA-251. I use a Focusrite Scarlett Audio interface & use my preferred DAW, Logic Pro X.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Oh gosh, so many. I have a very eclectic scope of admiration across every genre: from the greats of the past like Ella Fitzgerald & Frank Sinatra to Stevie Nicks to Michael Jackson to the pop icons we all know and love. In today's music world - I love the fully stacked, front facing vocal production of Finneas & Billie Eilish, and I also love the emotive, soft and intricate vocal deliveries of groups like Tiny Habits. And John Mayer - I love the songwriting and musicianship of John Mayer.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of vocal work that I do for clients is for those with pre-written tracks and for clients who are looking to add in lush layers and harmonies to their pre existing project.
