Interview with Paul Margot
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: my personnal project.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I'm new on here so not yet !
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Analog because it's sooooo cool and the sound is that 0,5% better. Digital because let's face it, it's easier, faster, offers way more possibilities, we can correct effects after the recording, and the sound quality has caught up.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: it will SLAP.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Not having a boss and playing music ALL DAY
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Do you have a reference track ?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: get reference tracks. Words and adjectives are deceiving. Take some time to find music that songs like what you want so that you can understand what is it exactly what you want, and your musician will understand as well.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: my deluxe reverb amp assuming there is electricity. I would plug my 1980 Les Paul in it because i'd never go away without it, then a strat because you know... then my acoustic to play some lover songs on the beach and finaly recorder to write and remember my great ideas born of craziness on the island
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I'm 26 and have been playing for 15 years, recording for 6 ans living as a professional musician for 3 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I love playing guitar and had the chance to do it in all kind of different scenario so i have no style of preference but lately I write pop disco songs
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to produce and work with artists making their debuts and rapidly growing like Zaho de Sagazan. (Huge fan)
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Double your rhythm guitars and put one on each side ! easy trick that changes everything.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: It's usually french pop, heavily inspired by disco and funk artists.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would say my stronger suit is writing catchy melodies or riffs.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I record everything myself. the guitars go through a Fender blackface Deluxe Reverb, either through a SM57 or a DI box straigh into the interface. I have multiple guitars to match every pickup or wood combo needs.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am a huge John Mayer fan but when it comes to production, Rick Rubin changed my life.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I record licks and solos in any genre
