Interview with Paolo Bruno Musella

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: I prefer analog gear due to his subtle warmness and depth. I collaborate with a studio where lots of pieces of gear are available. But from my home studio (except for the tracking) I work mostly in the box due to all the space needed for analog gear.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: I will work in order to get things just right!

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: My favorite genres are blues, rock and pop-rock but working on productions I feel comfortable working with every genres.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: I guide the artist in the production and choice of sounds and help him find an arrangement that enhances his ideas.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: I start by creating a structure with guitar chords. Then I record all the rhythm section with drum and bass. Than overdub the new guitar parts, and even add some solo parts if needed. For keys, synth and pads I work in the box. Finally I can mix and master the piece so I can deliver the most complete work possible. But for a professional mixing I recommend turning to other experts.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: I work on Logic Pro 11. I record using different microphones based on the needs (sm57, beta58a, pair of sE8). I also have a BA 19a for the bass drum in order to record a full Ludwig classic maple and paiste drum set. For the rest of the setup I can work either with amplitude 5 or amplifiers. Finally I use UAD plugins and Waves audio plugins.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: I help artists finalizing their projects by producing the entire song. Otherwise I'll be happy to help them by creating guitar parts for their songs.
