Interview with timavocalist
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I recently worked on a song that hit over 500K streams on Spotify within two months — I wrote the lyrics, crafted the topline, and sang all the vocals. It was a special one because it started as a DM from a first-time producer and ended as a global collab!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m finishing vocals for an Afrobeat EP, writing toplines for a house producer in Sweden, and producing demo vocals for a sync licensing client in L.A.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: If you need a male vocalist or EDM producer, I’m happy to recommend a few collaborators I’ve worked with. Just ask!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I work primarily digital for speed and flexibility, but I love the warmth of analog emulation — especially on vocals. Plugins like UAD and Waves bridge both worlds beautifully.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To treat your song like my own — with care, passion, and a commitment to quality. I don’t deliver until we’re both proud of it.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Turning someone’s vision into sound and seeing them light up when the vocals hit just right. That moment of creative connection is everything.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Most ask: “Can I hear a rough idea before committing?” My answer: Absolutely! I offer quick topline sketches or lyric ideas before diving into the full recording.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That singing or songwriting just “happens naturally.” While inspiration is real, crafting a great vocal or lyric is a skill that involves editing, intuition, and technical precision — like any professional craft.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What’s your genre and reference artist? What vibe or emotion are you aiming for? Do you need lyrics, topline, vocals — or all three? What’s your deadline?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be as specific as possible with what you want — share references, emotional goals, and technical needs. It helps us deliver exactly what you're envisioning, faster and better.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Neumann TLM 102, Scarlett 2i2, MacBook Pro, Logic Pro X, and Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones. That’s all I need to create, record, and deliver magic!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started writing songs in my teens, recording demos in college, and built my portfolio over the last 7+ years. I’ve worked with indie artists, producers, and sync clients across the U.S., UK, and Africa.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Emotional, modern, and melody-driven. Whether it’s a stripped-down acoustic or a dancefloor-ready beat, I aim for vocals that are clean, heartfelt, and commercially viable.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to collaborate with Tems. Her voice, emotional writing, and ability to connect across genres is something I deeply resonate with. I feel like we could make something that blends soul and rhythm beautifully.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: When layering background vocals or harmonies, keep them slightly detuned (not perfectly stacked) and pan them wide. It creates a rich, emotional atmosphere without crowding the lead.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I mainly work on Pop, R&B, Afrobeat, Indie, and EDM crossover tracks. I love blending soulful melodies with contemporary production.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I’d say my melody creation and vocal tone versatility. I can adapt my voice to sound airy, powerful, soulful, or rhythmic depending on the genre — and I’m obsessed with creating toplines that stick in your head after one listen.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Emotion, clarity, and a memorable hook. I write and sing with the listener in mind — aiming to make every lyric relatable, every melody sticky, and every performance honest.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First, I listen carefully to your track and your vision. I’ll sketch ideas and send a rough topline or melody. Once approved, I record clean lead vocals, harmonies, and any BGVs, then comp and lightly tune them before delivering both dry and mixed stems. Clear communication and fast delivery are my priorities.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I record from a treated home studio with a Neumann TLM 102 mic, Scarlett 2i2 interface, and I use Logic Pro X as my main DAW. For vocals, I use Melodyne, Auto-Tune Pro, and a collection of Waves plugins for clean, polished stems.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by artists like H.E.R., Tems, Jorja Smith, Jon Bellion, and Sia—people who bring raw emotion into their writing and vocal delivery. On the production side, I admire the detail and atmosphere producers like P2J, FINNEAS, and T-Minus create in their arrangements.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly provide lead vocals, topline writing, and custom songwriting for pop, R&B, and Afrobeat tracks. Many clients come to me with instrumentals or beat ideas, and I help them turn those into fully written and recorded vocal tracks ready for release.
